At the risk of getting snarky dismissive replies, this is 100% a procedural move to open up a 40-man spot. DeGrom was already gearing up for rehab starts anyway so he’s really only getting a couple extra in before he’s eligible to come off in late June.

As others have said already, this is a retroactive thing and he’s still eligible to retire at the end of the month. Nobody expected him back before that anyways. With Howard being called up, this opens up a spot on the 40-man.
