John Keim: Rivera on if there’s a QB competition: “Just because we said Sam will start off as QB1 doesn’t mean he’ll finish as QB1…He’s very, very capable of that…[But] we talk about Jacoby almost as much as we talk about Sam.”

  1. Aka Coachspeak…Thanks Ron! 😁 To be fair, not sure what they are excepting him to say other than that.

  2. This is the right approach. Sam has shown promise, but there’s no guarantee he’s the guy.

  3. Seems reasonable. Howell is getting set up by the org to win the job, but if he is incapable of doing that they will pivot to the other option. Obviously everyone would prefer to see Howell out there, but Rivera’s ship is sinking and he is going to try everything in his power to save his job. I don’t think Brissett has the ability to save Ron’s job, but if Howell really can’t piece it together it might be his best option.

From reports it sounds like Howell has produced a good amount of wow throws, but defenenders are also getting their hands on the ball a lot. Seems like Howell is struggling with intermediate decision making, seeing floating defenders in zone, and locking into reads and forcing the ball in. We are just getting to minicamp and it is Howell’s first real work with the 1s, but it sounds like the coaching staff has a list of things they want to worth through with Howell if he is going to be QB1.

  4. I think this is similar to how Ron dealt with Haskins in the media. Everyone knows he’s gonna start, but he doesn’t want a young QB getting complacent or feeling like he’s made it.

  5. Yea. Sure.

Howell is QB1. A journeyman QB offers no benefit as a starter to this team. We live and die with Howell or we move on.

  6. Rivera knows if Brisset is starting QB for majority of games then his ass is getting fired this year.

  7. If Brissett starts the beginning of the rebuild starts. The new ownership will start fresh with their front office people and you will see us selling before the trade deadline. Ron all but seals his fate with that move. His only chance is showing development of a young, cheap qb.

  8. I don’t understand the waffling to be honest with you, if Sam is starting lets let him start. I am so tired of QB Controversies. If he sucks we move on.

  9. Ron will start out as HC1, but it doesn’t mean he’ll finish as HC1…. He’s overstayed his welcome, and doesn’t understand playoff elimination scenarios.

    -New ownership, probably

  10. While I would love to see Sam succeed, Ron makes it sound like we are in Caleb mode.
