[Bill Shaikin] It is increasingly apparent the A’s are struggling to secure the votes necessary for approval of the bill that would provide them $380 million in taxpayer funding for a ballpark in Las Vegas.

  1. No locality should ever vote in favor of giving their taxpayers money to a billionaire to build a stadium that will make said billionaire millions more for decades to come

  2. Man, fuck taxpayer funded stadiums. If you want to make billions, then invest in it

“Oh no, we just won’t move to Vegas”.

Sure, pal. And if not, someone else will.

Taxpayers have never ever one time made out on these scams.

  3. Be aware that this might end up being “negotiating in the press” by the Nevada Legislature. Never trust that leaks are telling the full story, no matter how much you might want to.

EDIT: Some good news, at least: The Nevada Legislature has adjourned for the rest of the week, coming back on Monday. Sounds like the initial efforts at winning over the hesitant state senators wasn’t working out (too bad so sad).

  4. All I want is for the Twins to finish one game under .500 and win the Central, and for the As move to go down in flames.

  5. What value does a baseball team add to Las Vegas? Is it enough to justify spending that kind of money?

  6. lmfao good on what planet does it make sense for the public to finance a ballpark that the team itself admits would be mostly catered towards tourists?

  7. Is that money just for infrastructure? Because I’m not opposed to public funding for infrastructure for privately financed projects (in fact I’m for it when the project provides a benefit), but if he wants a single fucking cent more fuck em

  8. This is why you should always scoff at anyone who says a rich business person is automatically some brilliant negotiator. The A’s blew their biggest piece of leverage by publicly blowing of Oakland. So now Nevada/Las Vegas can just say to Fisher “Where else are you going to go?”

  9. Sounds like Nevada is realizing that if the A’s move to Las Vegas, then Fisher will be coming too.

  10. I wonder what’ll happen once the lease is up and this falls through? Will the A’s just… not play baseball? I mean, they aren’t now – but like all together.

  11. This is a gift from the heavens. Vegas is turning them down. So they’ll try to backtrack and weep about how they always wanted to stay in Oakland. But Oakland government equally is fed up with them.

So where will the two headed dipshit monster of Fisher Kaval go then?

2024: please welcome your Tijuana Athletics!!!!

  12. Please consider San Jose. We really do not want to lose the A’s from the BA. My 5 year old son is devastated.

  13. No reason taxpayers would want to foot the bill for a historically bad baseball team.

  14. Practically nobody here in Vegas actually wants the A’s to come here. So many people are against it. I’m sure the teams performance doesn’t help public opinion

  15. Good. Why the fuck should the public have to pay for that assholes stadium

  16. The idea that anybody’s tax dollars should go to funding any ballpark, stadium, and/or arena for the interests of millionaire/billionaire owners and their admin staff is ridiculous and absurd. However, if the public got a direct benefit from such a move, it *might* be okay

  17. Seems like vegas wants them about as bad as Oakland. For the sake of MLB, move to Charlotte or Nashville.

  18. Good. No taxpayers anywhere should pay a dime for a sports team’s stadium.

  19. Billionaires should use their own money. Any politician that approves this should be voted out.
