  1. Locking up a good defensemen: yes, love that Jarmo

Giving him term until he’s 37: I don’t know about that one

Edit: it apparently only cost a third round pick. I’m fine with that.

  2. Jarmo just set the market for defense. Good luck to any teams trying to add defenders this off-season.

  3. Well I have to say the defense already looks miles better with Provorov and Severson added.

  4. Jarmo to Gavrikov

    “I can’t give you term”

    Gavrikov

“I’ll sign without term then somewhere else”

    Jarmo

“I’ll give this guy money and term”

  5. considering the fact that defender takes longer to develop i am fine with that… by the time most of this defense core will be gone svozil mateychuk jiricek ceulemans etc will hop in.

  6. Love the move. We needed to get older and more experienced quickly. Solid player who is always available. Jarmo laying his balls on the line now. Love it

  7. Devils fan here, I had him pegged around 6.5mm x 5 or 6 so I don’t think this deal is a wild overpay. The term is what scares me, and I’m sure you guys as well. He’s been just about the healthiest player we’ve had so that’s a bonus, he won’t miss many games.

As for his game he played a little more sheltered minutes (50/50 DvO zone starts) this season but ended up being our best defenseman for the last ~30 games and playoffs. He has zero issue joining the rush and shooting. Above average puck moving dman. He has a flair for the very disastrous turnovers, you’ll get those once in a while but they’re not as bad as people make them out to be if you have a goalie that doesn’t let in every good chance.

Take care of him, he went through some shit here in the worst years of our franchise.

  8. As a neutral observer this seems bad? Loading up for a roster that isn’t ready to contend yet and still doesn’t have a true 1C. Maybe I’m crazy, but this reeks of a guy that may not be long for his role so wants the team to improve overnight?

  9. Don’t know if jarmo trying this hard to get the team to win next year in order to save his job is the best thing for the organizations long term future. But we are all along for the ride. 8 years seems like a long term to give

  10. Ok, the D is going to be miles better than last year, therefor Elvis should be too. Now we wait for a centerman…

  11. What have all (most) of us said this offseason?

We need a 1C and a bona fide top 4 on D. It seems like this offseason we’re going to get that.

  12. I like it. The majority of the guys we’ve had the last two years were a part of the literal two worst defensive seasons in team history. Changes needed to be made. Mateychuk and Svozil seem have room to come up in a year or two. The right side has Severson and Gudbranson. Someone needs to go between Boqvist, Peeke, and Blanks, and honestly this should let Jiricek marinate a little longer in the AHL

  13. Love it. Severson’s a really good player. Yes, years 7 and 8 won’t be fun, but we’re already in that boat with Johnny. We’re in a 5-ish year window now. Don’t understand people moaning about 2030 when this will make us MUCH better for the next half decade. The cap will be far higher by then as well. This is a good gamble

  14. Man…. getting major Scott Howson off-season of 2011 vibes.

    Big trade for Carter (Provorov)
    Trade and sign Wisneiwski (Severson)

Somehow thinking these were the missing pieces…. when the team just wasn’t that good to begin with, and weren’t going anywhere with Mason (Merzlikins) being a major question mark in net.

The Carter/Provorov comparison is the weakest….but man. I’m having flashbacks.

  15. Again, Jarmo is approaching this offseason to make the playoffs.

For those saying jarmo is rushing the rebuild…what’s wrong with signing a 28 year old top line D-man to a 8 year contract?

  16. Jarmo fixing the blue line this season. If he keeps the 3OA and still picks up another center we will be in business. Wish the term was shorter but really can’t fault Jarmo for picking up Severson

  17. 28 year old defenseman who is likely in his prime at 8 years?

Sounds like a problem for 2030 CBJ. Great signing for today, problem for tomorrow.

  18. The term is a little long but that’s the only complaint I have. I love the signing.

  19. I feel like we’ve got enough pieces in the cupboard that Jarmo feels bolstering the defense and getting us the 1C gets us back on track.

I don’t think this is “win now or die mode” but Jarmo doesn’t want us in perpetual rebuilds like Arizona and Buffalo. This feels like a Rags rebuild where they were back to divisional playoff spots within 2-3 years.

I can see us being competitive enough for at least a wild card spot in that time frame with a divisional spot after. There’s no value in continuing to suck and draft more prospects. We have plenty of those.

  20. This is a good deal all around. Solid defender, had to over pay a bit, but he will slot in nicely on the first pairing w/ Zach.
Now my question is which Defender gets moved in a trade for Center depth?

  21. Nice! Defence looking good! Term is long but the cap goes up alot so 6.25 is more like 4m in the last 4 years

  22. I don’t care about the pick, I don’t care about the contract, I am just over the moon that we FINALLY are getting bigger on defense. I’ve been screaming that for years. I am so sick of watching our smaller Dman getting pushed around.

Love this move for simple that reason alone.

  23. r/hockey proves that they know fuck all about the Jackets with how they think our D is gonna be

  24. I’d rather be great today than maybe okay in 6 years. These off-season moves are already insane for us. The season isn’t over and FA is far from starting, yet we are already making groundbreaking moves.

  25. So our next move is trading our assets for better C and making more room. So which one is it, Lindholm or Hayes or someone else 🤔 what about Elvis ?
