Blue Jays make baffling choice to include Anthony Bass in Pride Weekend festivities

  1. Everyone knows what’s going on but no one will take responsibility. Sad time for the club and for everyone.

  2. Was planning on going to a game this weekend, now not planning to do to one until he’s off the roster. I know losing my $30 won’t make a big dent but hopefully more people feel the same and will do the same.

  3. I didn’t see it in a skim of the article, but who’s throwing the ceremonial pitch?

  4. What are they thinking? I know they’re trying to help Bass make amends, but this is a terrible idea. He’ll get booed like crazy. It’s an insult to the LGBT+ fans there. And, I say this as someone with empathy, it’ll be awful for Bass. Such a cringe-inducing idea.

Just trade him to a red state American team so this can go away. I know people want him publicly executed, what he did was wrong, but just let the guy go away quietly, I’m sure he’s humiliated and uncomfortable. Most people like him are ignorant, rather than malicious, he’s paid a price and hopefully learned a valuable lesson, and is more accepting and open-minded going forwards.

  5. this is insulting to Pride, and you know he’s gonna learn nothing from this. wonder if he’ll even get close to the person throwing first pitch or keep some distance since he apparently thinks LGBTQ is the devil and probably contagious

  6. People should get up and leave their seats while Bass is on the field, or turn away or something that the org won’t be able to easily ignore.

  7. Ok it’s baffling, but it’s also insensitive, short-sighted, idiotic and reductive

  8. Would be hilarious if the person doing the opening pitch, as protest, turned around and launched it into centre field.

  9. I hope there’s a counter protest by whoever is throwing the pitch to bass – as in, don’t throw it to him and hold up a sign, or something.

  10. Front office heads need to roll for this. This is a terrible terrible decision, it’s like they don’t know the city at all. Choosing not to DFA him at least they had the weak cover that it was a baseball decision. The opening pitch is not a baseball decision. This is just spitting in the eyes of their fans. Shameful.

  11. Anyone think that the Jays are deliberately doing this to Bass?

Like them saying “go take your lumps bro, you deserve it. We’re not going to shelter you.”

  12. The Jays have turned pride into an Anthony Bass redemption tour

The original point is completely lost

  13. The most ironic part is that Bass thinks he is being a faithful “brother in Christ” and defending his faith 🙄

  14. Here’s the thing that’s really bothering me.

After the initial issue, if he had actually taken steps to learn, educate himself, and demonstrate understanding of why his beliefs are hurtful to so many – I could actually understand why this *might* be a good opportunity to include him.

Instead, this bigot doubled down with the whole “my beliefs are my beliefs” bullshit. He very clearly demonstrated that his apology was fake and insincere; further insulting the pride community.

Not only should he not be involved in any pride celebrations, he should not be on this team any further.

  15. Now that I know he doubled down on his comments I apologize for my stance on giving him a chance

  16. Want to include him in Pride Weekend?

Put him in one of those Dunk Tanks, and all the money raised goes to LGBT+ programs.

  17. disgusting. sympathy for the oppressor is wrong! Blue Jays management is literally embarrassing its fans so Anthony Bass can learn about LGBTQ+ rights. Also its very hard to imagine he would be receiving the same level of sympathy from blue jays management if English weren’t his first language and his expressions of ‘accountability’ were lost in translation.

  18. That is what happens when capitalism tries to adhere to a social movement. It is never for the cause, whenever the cause gets in the way, it doesn’t matter anymore. I don’t know why everyone is so shocked.

  19. What are they doing here? This is a continuing embarrassment. Atkins and Schneider have been publicly contradicted by Bass himself in terms of just how remorseful he is and for what he is remorseful of. Now they’re planning to overshadow Pride Weekend by having somebody who obviously still feels celebrating LGBTQ people is “demonic” participate in the festivities? When is enough enough?

  20. This whole fiasco has made me question the decision making of our management group

  21. This sucks because now if people boo, the thrower might think they are booing them 🙁

  22. Why is it baffling if the Pride event organizers which obviously were included in such a decision decided it would be best to include him and Bass agreed to do it? The ones in the media and on the sub that are preaching don’t hate are the ones that are meeting hate with hate at this point.

  23. If they trot Bass out there to catch the ceremonial first pitch of Pride weekend, I think I’m done with the Jays. He straight up said he doesn’t think calling the LGBTQ2S+ community demonic and evil isn’t hateful and they are helping him repair his image. Brutal! The front office / management is a bunch of hypocrites.
