[DiGiovanni] ‘Real estate land grab’: Sixers’ proposed arena plans slammed by Philly activists

  1. Why do they want to move the arena now? I like that all our stadiums are in one place. And like why would you put it in the middle of a community like that?

  2. We can never have nice things in this city. People are so scared of progress and love being a second tier city.

The billionaires are willing to fund this whole thing in the dump of a dead shopping mall and people are NIMBY’ing.

  3. Why are people calling this “an empty stadium” they sell out like every game and it will become a new premier concert venue. Josh Harris is a business man. People cry about Philly needing cleaning up well this man will literally have that strip of philly pristine.

People are crying about traffic. Oh no 41 nights or days you may or may not need to take a detour so you can get home and shove a pint of ice cream down your throat with your Ukrainian flag hanging pretending you care about things but really just want people to think you care.

None of you actually care about China town, and to be honest besides like a 3 street stretch, Chinatown is a shithole. Let them come in and clean it up. This project would create so many jobs and so much income for the local area it’s absolutely insane people are legitimately upset they’re trying to “invade Chinatown”

What I said in the Philadelphia subreddit

  4. “How dare they want to develop the city, we love our shitty neighborhood just the way it is!”

  5. I think the proposal looks great. The stadium would be awesome for filbert street. In its current state there’s virtually nothing going on.

The only question mark in my mind is septa. So unreliable!

  6. Didn’t they just require ID’s to be shown prior to entering the mall where the stadium would be because of looting? Feel like it might be an upgrade of the current land…

  7. I’m only bitter because all of the stadiums/arenas are so convenient for me right now to drive lol would this be near a train or anything? I’m not too familiar with this location so it just seems like it would be a hassle to get there unless you lived in the city.

  8. I think it’s odd to not view the area as essentially Chinatown given that it’s a block from the Chinatown Arch and that a stadium does impact the area around it. It will raise rents on commercial and residential spots around there.

The stadium itself won’t displace anyone, but the impact on the area around it could. I also wonder if it will do anything to make the area any different. You’re talking about 8th – 11th and Market. That area isn’t going to suddenly turn into a different place.

SEPTA cannot even fund any useful projects let alone make their public transit nice. With a lot of people wanting to drive into the city for the games, I wonder how will parking lots be expanded. There’s one lot for the hotel around there and RTM, but they’re going to want to capitalize on that money maker too.

The other problem is that we’ve heard from business people before that nothing will change with projects and they do. The proposed impact is usually not as beneficial to the community as they claim.

The link goes into a bill that was about parking lots and closing streets near the proposed arena. We have to keep in mind that 6 years of construction, if not more, plus the amount of influx of people for Sixers games and concerts makes it a difficult issue for the community around it.

Personally I’m not entirely opposed, but I can see the reasons why people don’t want it. I also wonder how many of you commenting actually live in Philly and where? It’s weird to me to think this is just people opposed for no reason.

  9. You’re delusional if you think a new stadium is improving this city. It’s gonna do absolutely nothing. Philly’s been an absolute dumpster fire since COVID.

  10. I don’t really care if the sixers build something there or not. But that mall is dead, and east market needs some kind of development. Prolly the worst part of center city. Maybe more housing? I have no idea.

  11. I like the stadium district because it can move traffic. That said, I went to Indianapolis for a game. Stayed in a hotel downtown, walked to the game and back and it was pretty awesome. Parking for Pacers games seems like a bit of a nightmare where the stadium is located and they don’t have trains really that run into the city. Granted Indy is a lot smaller.

Downtown stadiums are electric. The restaurant and bar scene by the stadium in Indy was awesome. I just have zero confidence that the city of Philadelphia city organizers can pull it off. We have a ton of dumbasses working for the city who will not be able to organize the traffic and events planned down there.

  12. This sad franchise doesn’t deserve any funding of any kind. Overpaid bums with no heart
