  1. OEL was traded out of AZ on July 23, 2021 (12% retained) with Conor Garland for Antoine Roussel, Jay Beagle, Loui Eriksson, 2021 1st round pick (Dylan Guenther), 2022 2nd round pick (Hunter Haight), 2023 7th round pick.

Absolute highway robbery with what we got out of that trade in hindsight.

Edit: as a result of the buy out, while minimal, he will count against our cap through the end of the 2030-31 season

Edit 2: per capFriendly, Yotes lose one of their 3 retained salary (RS) slots for the next 8 years.

  2. I’m torn.

On one hand, I loved OEL. Great dude, the loss of his mom clearly sent him in a spiral, and he never recovered his “groove”. I wish him nothing but the best, and I’m sad this is how his career is winding down – with disappointment and getting bought out.

On the other, we absolutely ruined Vancouver on this trade. I remember all the people bitching and hating GMBA for this trade because we were dealing Garland, and I got bashed by a lot of folks for pointing out what a massive future-altering win this was for us – even if Garland ended up being a solid first-liner for the Canucks for the rest of his career. Now that they’re buying out OEL and trying to find someone willing to dump Garland on, this is cemented as one of the most egregiously one-sided trades.
