This makes zero fucking sense lol. Every draft choice ever is based on “the idea of what [player] represents.”
a) Pacioretty literally had 39 goals in a season where he was injured, and was consistently right on 40s doorstep.
b) Since ’07 Montreal has had 4 defensemen (Markov, Subban, Streit and Souray) score over 60 points. No other team has had more than 2 defensemen do that. Only 5 have had 2, and 8 teams haven’t had one score 60 at all.
ALSO 12 of those teams with 60pts defensemen only achieved that last year, when scoring has skyrocketed, particularly for defenseman. For example, when Markov got 60pts he was one of only two defensemen in the league to do it. This year, as mentioned there was 12.
c) How about getting some goalie stats? How many other teams can compare to the 2 different Vezina winners we’ve had in this period, and how we had the option to trade Halak even after he stole several playoff series because of the goaltending depth.
Moral of the story: the Canadiens in this era were built from the net out. The team had the greatest goaltender in the world for years, and absolute stacked defense which was also all about defensive production. We notice specifically now the absence of both a zone-entering d-man and powerplay quarterback because we were spoiled with those type of players for years, and they’re damn important. And whether you like or not it had some success because:
d) In the last 10 and 15 years, Montreal are 11th in playoff wins in the NHL. Y’all are acting like this was a trainwreck of a team since it was a dynasty. Despite currently being in a full-on tank, we still rank in the higher tier of team success compared to other teams.
e) To compare to other teams with similar goalie/defense prioritized set-ups… the Nashville Predators, a team that has consistently been a competitor, just got their first 40 goal scorers in franchise history this year, and it was in the first time they missed the playoffs in 8 years.
Before last year the most points one of their players has had was 85 and the most goals a player had was 33. It didn’t stop them from making the cup finals and consistently being a threat because they were built form the net out with Rinne, then Saros, and had Josi, Suter, Timonen, Weber and Subban on the back-end.
If that doesn’t hit the nail over the head, that’s a very similar comparison to the Habs, and you don’t really hear people say how Nashville wasted the career of Rinne, because of the lack of offensive support. In fact, you usually hear how well that team was managed.

f) Caufield’s obviously going to rip 40 this season, calm down 😉

To be honest this is something that I’ve been saying for a while but due to the lack of an offensive superstar since the mid 80s I feel that Habs fans have gotten to the point of desperation where they’re begging to get a high-risk high-reward player in Michkov. It’s honestly something that really irks me because I know that if Montreal was to get Carlsson or Smith (hypothetically) that there would be Habs fans that would riot online because of it, when in reality nothing in life (or hockey) is guaranteed. If we take Michkov and he busts and the next 5 players in the draft become great NHL players then fans would be ready to hang Hughes in town square because of it, even if they were desperate for Michkov five years prior. Even if people don’t admit that they would think that way, I still wouldn’t believe them because this is the level of desperation that we’re at and I’ve seen just how wild and rabid this fan base can get over the littlest of things. I know I’m sounding like an old man right now but the NHL draft is unpredictable, and so are the players that come out of it. No matter who Montreal takes, we should just be excited for the potential that they have and how the future continues to look bright even if they aren’t gonna score at a McDavid level every year. Michkov or not, the next 5 years are gonna be fun.
