Here’s the call that got MAT ejected. Is this a ball? Is the grey shade part of the zone or just the 9 squares? Very close pitch. Also on the TV broadcast Dick was saying that the zone the umps get evaluated with is different from the box on the TV broadcast, which made the call look a lot worse than this does.

It’s a ball. The shaded part is outside the box. Here’s the same at bat on Baseball Savant.

The robots would call it a ball. Fairly close though, we’ve seen worse.
The issue with the box representation is the plate is 3 dimensional. If it’s not over the plate at the front edge but is moving enough to clip the back corner, by definition it’s a strike.
That said umps usually call based off the front of the plate anyway because holy shit imagine trying to see that in real time.

Did the umpire have eyes made of cheese today? Yes. But he was shit across both sides.
