[Grant Afseth] An update on Kyrie Irving’s free agency from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski suggests that the Dallas Mavericks will “show some restraint.” He’s still “inevitably” expected to re-sign with the Mavs.

“Kyrie Irving is trying to create a market out there. It may just not be there for him. Certainly, Dallas, I think, is going to try to show some restraint, some discipline on what they’re going to offer Kyrie Irving with a new deal in Dallas. It’s going to be more than anybody else can offer him.

“I think he’s going to try to spend some time here trying to manufacture a marketplace of salary cap space and teams that might actually scare Dallas into thinking they have to up their offer. I’m not sure that’s happening. That will be an interesting process as it plays out. I still think Kyrie Irving inevitably will return back to Dallas on a deal to play with Luka Doncic.”

  1. Death, Taxes, Cuban losing star point guards for nothing by low-balling them.

I’d be hesitant to pay him huge money as well for the record. Just weird it seems like this same exact pattern happens with our star guards throughout franchise history.

  2. I don’t blame Kyrie for trying to get what he feels he is owed or trying to max out what he can get. That’s just business and what any player would want to do

  3. I completely understand the Mavs doing this because on paper they have all the leverage, I just hope Kyrie doesn’t get pissy and bitter long term if it doesn’t play out how he wants it to.

  4. See Kyrie signed within 1min of the FA opening and make all this media takes look bad.

  5. Honestly I’m fine with not re-signing Kyrie. I’m biased though since I didn’t want him on the team in the first place.

I know that this creates a big mess currently, because we won’t even have money to sign others to replace his production, but our cap situation is so good in the next few years. We pretty much have only Luka’s contract on the books moving forward. Having Kyrie on a max or near max contact isn’t ideal for various reasons.

I know Luka isn’t that patient and I am aware that we are not attracting big free agents, but I would rather see the Mavs get out of the Kyrie mess and rebuild in the next 2 years.

  6. Im just concerned this would affect his motivation to play if they don’t offer him a full max

  7. It would be interesting to see how Dallas would respond if Kyrie were to sign elsewhere. Anyone have any thoughts? Is it even possible for Dallas to be better this season without Kyrie?

Also, unless I’m having a brain fart, I can’t think of a single superstar who has ever signed as a free agent with Dallas. Tyson chandler is the best free agent we’ve signed, and that was 13 years ago. And he was by no means a superstar.

So if we only look at the Mavs free agent signing history as a guide, Kyrie has already played his last game in Dallas.

I like Kyrie as a player even though his off court stuff is so frustrating and bonkers, and I’m still not convinced he’s a good fit with Luka either. So I wouldn’t be gutted if we didn’t land him. And I think Cuban and Nico are smart to stick to their guns on what they offer. A one year deal might be the best option if Kyrie is amenable. Keep in mind that if he signs a 4 or 5 year deal, he will be on the downslope of his prime for a season or two at the end of that contract.

  8. So it’s seems as though Skin’s cryptic tweet signifies what the Mavs are trying to pay Kyrie, not what Kyrie would accept. If so, this is another monumental blunder by Cuban. How tf do you waste two very valuable trade assets in the ’29 first and DFS on a half a season rental?

  9. Even 2 years 40 million is a lot
Ad some team option or hell even a player option into it, but with this guys record for the last 7! years more than 2 years would be insane

  10. It is all drama with this guy, we knew what we got into when we decide to trade for him now we have to live with it or get rid of him and somehow get something In return, I am inclined to the latter. Can’t stand this indecision and the constant rumors.

  11. Mavericks have the upper hand and the leverage on a great player. I’m proud of Nico, now finish strong with a good deal for both sides.

  12. We have all the leverage, we have no leverage. If he wants a 5 year and u only offer 4 how mad is gonna be?
