  1. Great pickup. Rounding out WBS but can be called up with 200+ games of experience at the NHL level.

  2. I posted this in the r/hockey thread but Dubas in his presser said they’re looking for “someone to run the powerplay” for Wilkes-Barre. I thought that was interesting cause I had Smith pegged as that guy.

Butcher makes sense, he’s run powerplays before at the NHL level (Devils in his rookie year lol) and in the AHL. Makes me wonder what his plan with Smith is.

Dubas from his Toronto days is known to be pretty under the radar when working on deals, but this just makes me feel like Smith (or POJ) is gonna be moved (and the other slotted in as the 3LD for the start of the year).

With the Graves signing and Elliotte Friedman saying Pettersson is going to be a part of plans going forward, that creates a logjam at LD (especially since there are guys like Rutta/Mark Friedman who play both sides).

  3. Didn’t GMJR take a run at him when he was a rookie free agent? He’s had a strange career trajectory, though. Had a very good rookie season in the NHL — 44 points. The went on a steady downward slide until he dropped all the way into the AHL.

That’s a good depth signing, though. Will definitely help the Baby Pens’ powerplay. And he’s a capable fill in for a call up, if need be. (I’m assuming his days an an NHL regular are probably behind him.)

  4. This guy was pretty good on the Devils a few years back.

Could be a big bargain at that price.

  5. I expected quite a few of these types of contracts given out after they had mentioned making WBS more of a competitive team that they could pull from if need be.

Still feels like there’s a good amount of movement to come, but I won’t hate him as the first/second man up from WBS in a pinch. Who knows, maybe they can even help him find his smile again like they had with J Schultz.

  6. So I can get a customized jersey with “Will the Butcher” on it?

“At my challenge, by the ancient laws of combat, we have met on this chosen ice, to settle for good and all who holds sway over Pennsylvania: us Penguins, born right wise to this fine state, or the foreign Flyers defiling it?”

  7. I didn’t realize he fell off so hard, I remeber when he was coming to the league I wanted the pens to get him just for the name. Well now we have him, or at least wilkebarre had him lol. I’m all for guys with nhl experience though, the more the merrier.
