I’m afraid that Jarred Vanderbilt will get screwed over in the rotation next season but I hope I’m wrong.

The Lakers have a defensive rating in the 95th percentile when both Vando and AD are the floor together.

Dude is just a flat out dog on defense and a menace on the boards given his position on the floor. I thought that Ham under utilized him last season in the playoffs. Hopefully Vando improves his 3 point shot or he might get squeezed into a low minutes role in the rotation given the new additions on the team. Last year it seemed like Ham did not know how to give Rui and Vando both adequate minutes both deserve 28 plus minutes each night.

  1. He’ll have regular minutes in the regular season. He’s only going to screw himself in the playoffs if he doesn’t improve on the offensive end.

  2. If he’s out of the rotation because he didn’t work on his offense in the off season then he’s not really getting screwed. He’s just not improving.

  3. Only AD,Reaves and Bron get consistent minutes everybody else is dependent on how Ham is feeling that day.

  4. His three point shooting needs to improve, but more than that he can’t finish around the basket.

  5. I still think Rui should come off the bench. Rui , Vincent Prince, with one of AD and or Bron leading the second unit would be good. Especially while other players rest ( Reaves DLo one of Bron or AD)

  6. He’s not getting screwed if Prince and or Rui outplay him on both ends. It’s up to him to add a serviceable jumper.

  7. > I thought that Ham under utilized him last season in the playoffs

It was basically 4 vs 5 on offense when he was on the floor. Love what he brings on defense but he needs to improve his shooting to keep his minutes.

  8. Vanderbilt will probably start in the beginning of the season, but if his offense doesn’t improve, then I would assume Rui or Prince will take his spot.

  9. If he becomes a respectable shooter from range he won’t have to worry about it

  10. He’s gonna be a starter guaranteed. Rui and Gabe off the bench for 2nd unit scoring. Rui can still close but there is no reason to start him and only having Gabe as a scorer off the bench

  11. Don’t worry players always get injured over the course of the long season, we have the depth at all positions except center.

  12. If he is a zero offensively, then yes. He deserves it. Can’t be having one way guys.

  13. Dick riding on another level… You’re afraid he’s going to get outperformed and benched again? If Tauren and Rui outplay him we are going to be the way better team lmao

I like Vanderbilt because he’s got good energy and he’s young but he’s so overrated… Even defensively he’s overated people like you think hes Elite defensively…

  14. He needs to improve his offensive game. Dude was unplayable at times due to providing nothing on offense. If he gets benched, it’s because he’s not being a two way player. The days of the pure defensive specialist is over. Guys need to play both sides of the ball

  15. Man, I love Vando’s tenacity on D.

He just doesn’t have what it takes to start.

    I think he’s a 10-12 minutes guy.

I’d start Rui over Vando every game.

  16. Between Rui, Max, Prince, hell even Reddish, Lewis we have some better options offensively than Vando if he doesn’t improve on that end.

  17. It’s up to him to improve offensively. He really provides nothing on the offensive end.

  18. I know he needs that corner 3 but goddamn he need to learn how to finish at the rim. How many semi contested layups did he blow

  19. While he needs to add atleast a pop shot to make defenses humble, if a 3rd scorer on the team steps up it would definitely help his weaknesses hide. It was only a problem.because they could leave him.open a lot of defense but if DLO or Reaves or Rui step up consistently that would make it like a Draymond effect when GSW had KD.

  20. Vando’s biggest issue is offensively. The jumpshot is something he can work on, but that takes time to get consistent/respectable enough to where dudes respect it. Think like Bruce Brown. Proved his shot was respectable all throughout the season. The reason I also bring Brown up is for a bigger issue Vando has that Bruce doesn’t.

Vando is horrible when it comes to finishing around the rim. He catches passes wide open or off rebounds and instead of powering up/under control, he overcompensates and instead throws something wild up. Him being able to properly finish would be even bigger than a three ball because guys on the opposing team would have to watch out for him on the glass off his energy alone.

If Vando is on the bench, that more than likely means Prince or Rui are giving us proper minutes and contributions. Vando will be fine, and I’m sure he’s improving, but whoever gives us the best chance to win is who’ll be on the floor.

  21. As others are saying, it’s not crazy that other guys (Rui, Prince, and maybe Christie sliding up to the 3) may end up deserving his PT.

I guess I am a little concerned that Reddish takes his minutes, but Reddish in general is a big TBD until we see him go out there and play

  22. If he can consistently knock down that corner 3 then I don’t see how anybody can deny him minutes. As it stands he’s unplayable on offense in critical situations so that would definitely get him a reduction in minutes.

  23. I think overall he’ll be like 7th or 8th on the rotation. Whenever we play vs some of the tougher wings and guards he becomes very valuable. Add in a full season and he’s offensive value will increase do to better sets and general improvement.

I just wish we had a 3 point shooting big, and he should play in lineups as the lone man in the paint and dunker spot.

  24. its a long season and Lebron is probably capped around 50 games, Vando is going to have a role that is bigger some nights than it is on others. He needs to show improvement offensively or he is not going to be in the playoff rotation

  25. Vando is a prime example why someone like Dennis Rodman wouldn’t have the same impact in today’s game. The offensive liabilities just far outweighs the defensive prowess.

If you can’t shoot, you have to be able to finish. If you suck at finishing, you have to be able to shoot. Vando really can’t do either all that well.

  26. He’ll still have minutes, especially for specific defensive assignments, e.g. Luka, etc

  27. Hopefully he can improve his offensive game, doesn’t have to be great, just fine. Can’t afford to have him in the game for too long because of his current skill. Ham knows this and he has to balance this, which is not easy.

  28. Wait until you realize we are likely going to dump Vando (or both Hayes and Redish) before the deadline just to get under the tax apron because as it is we are likely to end up just a bit above it, with a salary dump putting us below the apron. Jeanie is gonna want to start resetting the repeater tax + be able to get the tax money from tax paying teams.

  29. Lets be real

Ham makes adjustments in game 4 of the WCF

    He can’t be trusted

Dude just isn’t it at head coach

  30. He has bigger probs than 3pt improving. He can’t finish around the basket to save his life

  31. During the regular season all of this guys will play. Regular season is an audition for minutes in the postseason.

  32. He needs to work on his hands and finishing around the rim and corner 3pt shooting. Both of those were there for him and he just couldn’t contribute at a level they needed. His defense was fantastic but unless he can be somewhat of a threat on offense during the playoffs he’s going to end up in a similar situation as last year. At least he got to going into the offseason seeing where he fell short and what he needs to work on in the context of this team. That’s going to help a lot for his development

  33. only 8-9 players get consistent minutes.. can’t please everyone, Depth is a good problem to have

  34. If someone like Vando isn’t getting minutes, that means the team is really good.

  35. He’s our only dominant point of attack defender outside of AD. Hell get some burn

  36. I mean it’s pretty difficult to play someone who the defense is leaving wide open and he can’t make them pay for it.

  37. He’ll get plenty of minutes in the reg season.

If he can make an open shot or catch the ball on a cut he’ll be fine.

    But he has legitimate limitations

  38. Eh you have to account for AD and Lebron resting / being hurt. They need all the bigs they can get their hands on AD, Rui, Vando, Lebron, backup center. Lebron plays half or more at the SF or PF spot anyway, and they play Rui and Vando at the SF spot in the regular season some too. He’ll be totally fine, it’s just the playoffs / crunch time he’ll probably get moved out for AD, Rui, Lebron big lineup with some mix of D’Lo, Reaves, Vincent

The real wildcards are the boom bust pick ups of Hayes and Reddish then if Christie plays so well he has to play.

    Good problem to have

  39. It was his own fault. After that game where everybody praised him for locking up curry, he just did nothing. I literally lost bets on props betting that he would score even 4 POINTS IN THE GAME, and he never did.

He’s not a DPOY or anything that justifies him giving absolutely zero offensive threat or pressure.
