  1. Seen a lot of people shitting on Hunter after last nights game, which I think is very misplaced. It was never reasonable to expect him to be a literal JV clone. Hell, he wasn’t even supposed to be our defacto number 3 starter until all the injuries more or less forced him into that role. The fact is that he pitched almost 100 innings in the first half, with a 3.35 FIP and 2.2 fWAR. That is really quite good, and he’s likely only gonna get better in the coming years. Lay off the guy.

And for what it’s worth, I don’t really buy into the idea that he magically becomes better with Diaz behind the plate. I’ve always heard that you actually need quite a large sample size for game calling and catching ERA to be statistically significant. I think the discrepancy in their splits is largely just due to the fact that Diaz was primarily catching Hunter early on in the year, before the league had a chance to pore over his stuff and make the necessary adjustments.

Which is not to say I’m not just as frustrated as everyone else is with the playing time Maldy is getting. Just that I don’t think you can easily chalk up Hunter’s struggles to that one sticking point alone. He’s just a young rookie pitcher still trying to figure out how his stuff plays at the big league level, and it’s natural to see those growing pains expressed regardless of who’s behind the plate.
