OTD 9 Years Ago: LeBron James announced he was returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers

  1. One of the best sports days in Cleveland history. This started the best run of Cavs basketball we will probably ever see.

  2. Tracking Gilbert’s jet on Twitter, reading through all the replies from people who saw someone/knew something, those few days leading up to the announcement were INSANELY exciting

  3. I remember exactly where I was – in a cubicle at my shitty safelite job taking glass claims. Had to pretend to use the bathroom so I could hop on my phone and read the news. Am in a much better position in life these days so this post brings up some nostalgia.

  4. Bought season tickets within minutes of that announcement (well we called and were put on the wait list). And I listened to that “I’m coming home” song so many times that summer. Don’t know if this is the one or not.

  5. Sounds corny but you could legit feel the energy in the air after he announced he was coming back. Like everyone in Northeast Ohio was in a good mood for at least a full week.

  6. I was working at a Jimmy John’s in college, my boss showed me the notification that he was coming home and told me to go home and celebrate. I absolutely did that!

  7. Still remember the moment vividly. Was home from college sitting at my kitchen counter refreshing twitter waiting for some type of news to break.

  8. Was in between my junior and senior years of college, working for a summer camp and was at Cedar Point on one of our camp field trips at the time. All the counselors and kids paused their amusement park activities to huddle around a bar’s TVs to watch the story on ESPN.

Think it’s funny/great that this is one of those “where were you when…” moments for a lot of people.

  9. I was in the Goleta, CA (Santa Barbara County) BMV releasing I didn’t get my plates renewed quick enough and had to pay a $150 late fee to CA.

I’m pissed. Waiting for my number. Phone goes off with text messages to the article. My phone is at 5%. It dies.

I then start running around the BMV screaming “he’s back! He’s back! Lebron is back in Cleveland!” Im floating at this point.

At this point a elder gentlemen says to me “I have no idea who this Lebron is but I am happy you are happy.”

Paid the fee, rushed home, and celebrated.

  10. I was working at Burger King at the time, and we had days called “rally day” where we’d wear sports shirts/jerseys and compete with other stores in our region for the best drive thru times. We all wore Cavs stuff except one a-hole that wore a Steelers jersey on the day this happened. The moment this article was released, pretty much everyone who ordered got to the window, saw our Cavs gear, and their faces lit up with huge smiles and they’d say something like “HE’S BACK” or “WE GOT HIM!” Idk why that’s such a vivid memory for me
