  1. Been a fan since 86, but havent come near Boston that entire time until last weekend. We stayed at the Verb, which is as close as you can get to Fenway without sleeping in the stadium. When I turned the corner on Jersey Street and saw that huge “Welcome to Fenway” sign, I was speechless. And just seeing and being around so many Sox fans was unforgettable — like going to a concert of an old band, where everyone in attendance is a diehard like you.

I did the pregame tour, which was somewhat disappointing — not much of a tour, more of an opportunity to step on the field and atop the green monster. But Fenway is beautiful. You can feel the history, and seeing everything built out of bricks sparked nostalgia i didnt know i had. It’s tight and somewhat claustrophobic, but it’s how a baseball stadium is supposed to feel. I know work has been done over the years, but it feels like you’re standing in a venue that’s essentially unchanged for 100 years.

And the Sox won, extending their hitting streak. The game didn’t have much drama, but that was fine for my first trip.

The most unexpected aspect was how its just sitting there in the middle of a neighborhood — very old school. These days, a baseball stadium is the centerpiece of a commercial development plan. While there has obviously been some development, the neighborhood being mostly residential lends it a unique personality and atmosphere.

What an experience. I cant wait to go back. I’m not going to wait 40 years for my next visit.
