Draft WAR

Draft WAR

  1. This is the most useless stat considering the Yankees have been a 100-win team multiple times since 2015, and the Nationals in that time also won a WS. MLB draft ≠ NFL and NBA.

  2. This just exposes the elephant in the room. This team can not develop prospects well. The 2 of the first 3 (Dodgers, Cardinals) in that time span never once “tanked”. And the Astros are great at developing too. Those are well run organizations for a reason. This team is a laughing stock when it comes to drafting AND developing young players.

  3. this really puts into perspective the difference between the Dodgers and Yankees in the most recent era… and fuck the astros

  4. Yup! Cashman and his team are atrocious at drafting and developing talent. This is known by those who want to know. How he keeps his job is a mystery beyond my understanding, but it’s clear he won’t lose it barring some unforeseen circumstance.

  5. I wouldn’t conclude from this that the Yankees are drafting badly. They are always win-now so they trade drafted players for major leaguers constantly. The failure to get the right major leaguers is probably the bigger issue than how they draft.

  6. This is interesting but doesn’t necessarily tell you everything. It’s only the draft so prospects from international signings wouldn’t apply. It starts in 2015 which leaves out Judge, a huge success. And the Yankees tend to draft late compared to most other teams (not all, and there are others that finished much, much higher that also tend to draft late, like the Dodgers or Cardinals). The Yankees also, because of how they usually form their teams, tend to be very conservative with calling up their non bullpen prospects.

It’s still interesting because I don’t think there are obvious candidates of guys drafted from 2015 on that should be generating a ton of WAR in the majors but have been stuck in the minors. Volpe was actually called up earlier than you’d expect them to. But it probably says more about a couple mediocre to bad drafts in a very specific time period of 2015-2018ish, as guys drafted after wouldn’t necessarily be in the majors yet unless the Yankees were being aggressive, and guys drafted before like Judge aren’t being included in the numbers.

  7. So if the Yanks take the guy I want in the draft, I track his progress in the minors, wait a year or two, then trade my over the hill 34 and 35’s to Cashman and get him anyway. He’s probably floundering in the Yankee system, so Cashman thinks he’s outsmarting me. And I’m moaning and groaning and telling him, “Brian, youre killing me! You’re such a tough negotiator! Ok, ok, where do i sign, sigh…” And then keep my mouth shut.

  8. Don’t worry Cashman will get a job with any baseball team in the galaxy should be he let go by the Yankees!

  9. It could be worse. We could be like the Cardinals and draft elite talent only to trade it away for peanuts.
