[Morosi] As I reported on @mlb Network this morning, sources tell me the Angels front office will consider incoming trade inquiries for Shohei Ohtani. The club is not ruling out the possibility of a deadline deal, even though the standard to move Ohtani is extraordinarily high.

  1. > The team’s performance over the upcoming homestand will be a big consideration in the Angels’ ultimate course. At this point, many in the industry still view a trade as unlikely.

  2. I just don’t see it happening for two reasons:

    1. I don’t see any team willing to offer what the Angels want for a Shohei rental. And I don’t see a trade and extend situation here as I’m sure Ohtani wants to hit the open market.

    2. I don’t think any GM wants to be the one that traded away the best player in baseball history.

  3. It’s in our best interests to trade him. Especially if there is no hope for an extension.

  4. I’m doubtful Ohtani gets traded this season. I doubt the Angels and another team will ever agree on what 3 months of Ohtani is worth in terms of trade value. The only way I see it happening is a situation like when Johan Santana was traded to the Mets but a small window was given for them to complete a long term contract extension and the trade would only go through if a deal was reached. But even if the Angels agree to a framework like that I have serious doubts that Ohtani would be willing to forego free agency this winter

  5. “If someone would like to give us their entire farm system and cash considerations large enough to buy their team, then yes we will consider”

  6. I have a flight and airbnb booked to see the Angels in Toronto at the end of the month. What are the odds I see Ohtani at this point?

  7. A reminder that Morosi frequently embellishes or twists sourced information for attention. He’s one of the least reliable reporters and we should be skeptical of his reporting.

  8. The next 6 games are going to decide the fate of the season. If they can take both series against the Astros and Yankees then they are right back in the WC race and should buy hard at the deadline and really go for it in their last chance. But if they don’t make up any ground in that time then they need to trade everything that isn’t nailed down.

Right now, no one has a better idea of whether Ohtani might re-sign with the Angels, than the Angels. If they thought they had any realistic shot, they wouldn’t even entertain the idea of trading him. If they are now saying they’ll listen, then they probably believe he’s not coming back. It’s also good news in that Arte seems to actually listen to his GM now, which is good if it means that he may consider a true rebuild. Perry Minasian is from the Braves organization, which is easily one of, if not the best run team in baseball. If he actually is able to take full reigns of the team and rebuild it as he wants, the Angels could be scary in a few years.

But they have to commit to a direction. And that’s something Arte has simply refused to do to this point.

  9. It never hurts to listen. As great as Ohtani is, all it takes is 1 desperate GM to offer up the equivalent of the Herschel Walker trade.

  10. Angels don’t want to lose this guy.

But they are stupid if they don’t trade him, he’s gone in the off-season.

Every team in the league wants him.

But they are stupid to trade for him without an extension in place.

Will be really interesting to see what happens

  11. Trout is still on the Angels… which is a big factor in all of this. Is the Angels other superstar going to want to stick around for another rebuild or do they plan on moving him as well?

White Sox I feel are in a intriguing position to make an offer here… it would definitely be a gamble. However I mentioned it in the Sox sub a few hours ago and got downvoted to Hell.

If they do intend on keeping Trout… will the Angels be looking for big league ready talent over a haul of prospects? If they are the White Sox are in a prime position to try and make a deal as they appear to be ready to move on from their core.

Center a package around Eloy Jimenez, Yoan Moncada, Tim Anderson, possibly Kopech and throw in a prospect or two. Vaughn, Burger, Grandal… mix in a few other guys to make some package work. Thats alot of young big league ready talent… albeit they have some injury concerns. They have underperformed a bit in Chicago but given the right circumstances they could prevail elsewhere.

How many contenders would be willing to part ways with a couple core players (if that’s the Angels asking price) mid-season, possibly ruining the team chemistry for 2 months of Ohtani?

You could say the same about the Sox potentially losing out on core pieces for 2 months of Ohtani and not getting anything return as well.

The White Sox future is pretty bleak and if a trade were to be made and getting a head start in the Ohtani talks happens, it’s more exciting than what us Sox fans have been going through.

Let’s not forget about Jerry Reinsdorf though. If this pipe dream were to happen… convincing Jerry to offer such a contract for Ohtani is out of the question. But maybe 2 months of Ohtani and all the hype he brings with him is enough for him to open his checkbook.

  12. Teams understand that winning the WS is a bit of a crapshoot, and paying the enormous cost for shohei without extending him is a franchise-altering disaster. I think the Angels just hold onto him because they won’t be satisfied by what people are willing to pay

  13. I was on the he’s getting moved train until I heard a good take the other day. If Ohtani really wants to join a winner, being traded to a team that will have to give up top end bodies for him will hamper that goal, so it’d be in his best interest to play out his contract and only cost a future team money. So he’ll want to stay and make the PR hit for the team even worse if they try to trade him.

  14. Almost impossible to trade him but not trading him means the Angels let him walk while getting nothing for it. Would be crazy stupid not to try to trade him.

  15. If a trade actually happened, could you imagine being the GM that will always be known for trading Shohei Ohtani? That’s a tough situation.

  16. The idea of a “trade for and extend” situation seems like fiction to me.

The MLBPA would prefer him to get to the open market to secure the biggest bag possible.

  17. We all thought the same things about Soto last year, and sure enough when the deadline came someone made a good enough offer. I think it’s happening again this year, but no idea who

  18. the problem for the angels relative to the soto deal is they have no leverage. the nats didn’t have to trade soto so the padres had to make an offer that forced their hand. unlike the nats, the angels hand will be forced by their situation (unless they go on a tear that puts them firmly in playoff contention). and when that happens, all they can do is reach for the best offer or walk away empty handed.

  19. If the Angels think there’s a chance they can resign him there’s no world where they trade him. He is too valuable to them commercially. If they don’t think there’s a chance he’ll resign they should absolutely move him. But only they know their chances.

  20. He is not getting traded this year. He is chasing the AL HR record regardless of Angels’ record. No one remembered McGwire’s Cardinal team’s record that year, they only remembered McGwire hitting no.70 in a Cardinals uniform.

No way Moreno would let him break that record in another uniform.

  21. I see this all as trade deadline buzz doubt he’ll actually get traded thoe.

  22. There’s 0 way to win an Ohtani trade as the angels right? You’d basically have to give up your entire farm to get him and maybe an mlb guy or two. Every gm knows that you don’t wana be guy who lets Ohtani walk for nothing so surely that lets you strong arm a deal for less

  23. O’s could totally trade for him and still have a great future….I don’t think it’ll happen but boy would I be happy to see that! Tho not for Holliday. I feel like he’s just untouchable.

  24. Good. We ruined the first act of his career. At least we can get some prospects for him and he can play for a team that isn’t humiliating.

Fuck Arte Moreno with a cactus.

  25. Trade him now. It almost surely will eliminate the Angeles from wild card contention, that increasing the probability of another team making the playoffs. And I think someone would trade a top flight prospect or twop for three months of Ohtani, a run at 60 homers, a chance at the World Series, and the possibility of getting an inside position at signing him in free agency.
Personally, as great as he is, once a free agent, would a team be better off obtaining help at multiple positions rather than pledging such a high percentage of the payroll toward a single player? If I were a GM, I would make a make a run at the guy if for no other reason than to push up the price paid by a competitor.

  26. People said the Juan Soto trade was very unlikely at the time and it happened.

Now this is apples and oranges compared to both players and teams being in completely different situations, but I think the percentage of it happening is more than 1%. It’s just not much higher and I think the team that’s making the trade for Ohtani would be costing their team a lot.

Just for the sake of argument, if the Padres got him it’d be really dumb considering it doesn’t address the actual flaws of the team and the minor league depth is even more wasted

  27. Trading for him would be a huge disadvantage, even if he propells you to the WS. The cost would be unspeakable, and could sink the franchise for years. Let him finish out the year in Anaheim and lure him as a free agent
