So many questions the front office have to answer in the next few weeks about the future but it’s clear one of them won’t be “Should we be buyers?”
If the Cubs are unable to go .500 from the beginning of the second half to the trade deadline at a minimum, then they do not deserve to be buyers. Performing poorly in an extremely important month of July will be the harsh reality of this team.
It’s on Drew Smyly and Jameson Taillon to keep our season on life support.
Who plays center after Bellinger is dealt? Velazquez (assuming no PCA fasttrack)?
kind of ugly game but at least they fought back a bit at the end there. The next two series obviously will be crucial.

On it’s own, not a terrible game. Steele had a bad start, been he’s been great for most of the season so he gets a bit of leeway. Offense showed some late life, and most of the time 5 runs should win a game.
As far as the season overall, it’s looking more and more with each day that Belli and Stro will be gone at the deadline. I’m fine with it, as long as there is obvious improvement next year.

I want the cubs to buy but how can you be encouraged to buy when games like this happen. And let’s be honest, it’s happened a lot this year. We’re still a year out from competing and there’s building block here. No doubt. But we need to trade expiring assets, and roll the dice on some Iowa kids and see what we have.
Perlaza, Slaughter, Vazquez, Velasquez should all be called up. Bench pieces and outfield/infield players who deserve an opportunity.
Cam Sanders, Wesneski, and Bailey Horn should get an opportunity in the pen.
Unless this team goes on a tear the next week or so, there’s no world in which they should be buyers.
