[Chron, Michael Shapiro] No, Shohei Ohtani trade doesn’t make sense for Astros

  1. For a split second i envisioned facing Ohtani and Alvarez in the same lineup 20 games a season….as a mariners fan i have a high pain tolerance…..but that’s just too much to bare.

  2. It makes sense in the post season…how could any team expect to beat the Astros when Framber and Ohtani pitch 4 games with Ohtani in the lineup? WS win or bust at that point.

The thing about it too is the cost isn’t nearly as high as one would imagine either because the Angels don’t have any leverage…my 2 cents.

  3. Interesting take: I think Ohtani will not sign with the Angels in FA. I think that’s almost a guarantee. That being said, the price of trading for him may not be as high as people think.

From the Angels perspective, if you’re confident that you can’t resign him in the off-season, you have two options:

    – Don’t trade him and lose him in the off-season for nothing.
    – Trade him for literally anything and still have the same chance of signing him in the off-season.

The Angels will obviously not trade him for scrubs but the package might not be this insane group of prospects people make it out to be IF the Angels believe Ohtani won’t sign with them next season.

  4. Eh. Yankees are in last place, they are about to over pay out their asses for a lot of players.

There isn’t much I would give up for Ohtani. A temporary use of him isn’t worth the asking price.

I wouldn’t mind taking a shot at him during FA, but not to over pay. I want our current players to be paid first.

  5. I think if he’s dealt, he’d prefer the team he’s going to sign with be that team with a package already lined up and I don’t think the Astros are willing to pay the $500m/10yr tab.

But I think if they were willing, we do have the trade bait.

  6. Fine I’ll say it. There isn’t a prospect in the system I’m willing to hold to get him for 2 months. We would be a really tough team to beat.

  7. As someone who’s tired of hearing about Ohtani 24/7 and also tired of people whining about the Astros, this would be hilarious.

  8. It’s not worth the cost unless it doesn’t detract from keeping other key players…. just way too risky

  9. Trading for Ohtani would make sense for all the other 29 MLB teams if he would agree to stay long term.

The cost for a rental is the risky part.

  10. First of all, this article kind of sucks. It doesn’t address the more realistic trade chips in McCormick, Diaz, Brown and Gilbert

Second of all, way too many Astros fans aren’t in favor of renting Ohtani for 1/2 a season.

Saying things like “we can’t give up our future” is missing the fact that the 2023 playoffs ARE PART of our future. The goal is to win the WS.

If we had Ohtani, maybe the best hitter and among the best pitchers, then it’s like trading for an elite Ace starter and elite MVP caliber hitter. We would be WS favorites.

Therefore, I think you have to consider a package like: Ohtani for McCormick, Brown and Diaz

(Not even sure the Angeles would go for that)

  11. Around 2012, 2013 we had some large salaries, and we had to divest, then loose a bunch of games, build from the ground. Crane bought the team, hired Luhnow and both engineered on of the most dramatic turnarounds in baseball history. The model was never to go back to signing large-salaried players. So don’t believe Shohei is on the Astros radar.

  12. It’s funny to listen to the ESPN announcers blabbering on and on about ohtani not worrying about the money, he wants to win, blah blah blah. Come to Houston and your guaranteed multiple WS. Won’t happen though, because it is indeed about the money. Always is. Winning is a close second, but second none the less.
