[From Archives]NFL mock draft: Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy a first-round pick in 2021 NFL draft?

It’s not uncommon for a projected first round QB to get drafted in later rounds after 2 years, mostly this happens for top high school prospects gets into big school and never lived upto expectations.
Brock is not a top high school prospect. Everything about this kid is unique, he got grossly misevaluated by scouts and 49ers got lucky.
Well in 2020, Iowa State made the Big12 Championship and Purdy was 1 yr removed from his best statistical college season…so in a draft where Lance and Wilson got first rd grades based on just 1 season as starters it is possible that he goes at least as early as the second rd.
The same evaluations of lack of size ( despite being the same height as Jalen Hurts, Baker Mayfield, Zach Wilson and taller than Bryce Young) and supposedly subpar arm would stop him from being drafted in the first rd IMO.
Of course based on what we know now, he goes probably in the first rd of the 2022 draft that was called weak at the QB position.
The Draft is a tricky thing..especially for QBs….Bart Starr ( won 2 SBs and multiple NFL Championships for the Lombardi Packers) was a 17TH rd pick in 1957….Johnny Unitas ( Invented 2 minute drill, led Colts to 3 NFL championships and 1 SB) was a 9th rd pick I think….not to mention Joe Montana ( 3rd rder), Tom Brady ( 6th rd) and Russell Wilson (2nd rd). All these guys are HOFers or will soon be in. I didn’t even mention Roger Staubach, Jalen Hurts and Drew Brees..all non 1st rders.
Every 10 years or so you get a massive underdrafted QB steal and Purdy certainly is off to a good start.
I mean, if you’re playing the re-draft game, he’s a top pick not just a first rounder.
They didn’t miss him, they simply valued other stuff and didn’t see the rarity in his skill set. League lost perspective.
Didn’t his O coordinator change in year 3, and apparently, that guy sucked at his job and had to make Purdy play hero ball, causing mistakes.
