[Classic Hockey] – Poetry in a Picture Frame – An Era Gone by…

All look awesome but that first picture is really weird. I think the goalie is really far out of his net in that one. Because from his position, you would assume that the net would be between the goalie and the camera position, but I guess it’s to the right just out of frame.
I count myself lucky enough to have seen hockey from the mid to late seventies. I can’t imagine how Wild it would have been to see hockey in the 60s.
I actually have a framed version of that Beliveau/Bower picture!!
The ice looks so dark in the first picture, hell of an atomsphere
So many ties in the crowd pre-70’s. I’m not sure whether it was arena lighting or camera tech that made the difference between 50’s/60’s shots and those from the 70’s. Maybe both.
I still think the kid behind the net in that last picture is a time traveller.
Thank you for sharing these, amazing walk back into yesteryear.
Love the first shot, and others too.
Why is the ice so dark in some of the pictures, do they add white now?
Lights?
I love how dark the arenas used to be. Keeps the focus on the ice.
It’s absolutely wild how many generational players played for the Habs the first 70 years of the leagues history, even more than other O6 teams. The Richard Brothers, Le Gros Bill, LaFleur, Dryden, Plante, Robinson, just insane.
Even the fans were brave, especially the ones sitting behind the net.
The lighting certainly makes this more cinematic, damn.
And I whine and complain when I get a hangnail. These guys had cahones the size of hockey pucks!!
that first picture goes so fucking hard wtf
Pic four looks like Beliveau, Horton, and Broda. Is that possible?
I don’t know where you found these old pictures but please keep them coming. They are fantastic! Thank you!
Pic # 2. What’s the sign hanging above the goalie? It looks like a snake with the #1 on it.
There are some pretty famous players in these photos!!
Photos of the olden days are always awesome until you look close and start to think about the old days and look closer at the photos of the crowd and what that means for people who look different.
Forget outdoor games. I want to see an old-timey game where players wear retro jersey & retro-styled equipment, no ads on boards and whatever else to get this kind of old school aesthetic.
Lafleur could be a NOW player. So elegant and smooth !!
Not even the same game anymore . Thanks for the pics!
Note the brand new technology “Tuk” blades on the skates of Robinson, Savard, Esposito and Larouche in pic #3. We all had to have those instead of the old school metal tubes of old. In minor hockey about half had the new blades, the other half were have-nots.
Pic 2 looks like Johnny Bowers in goal for Toronto
Pic 3 looks like Ken Dryden in goal for Montreal and to the right of the goal is Phil Esposito for the NYR, so post trade with Boston so probably 1976ish
Pic 4 also looks like Bowers in goal
Pic 7 obviously Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita on Chi
Pic 8 has #7 in blue a young Rod Gilbert, Mr. Ranger (RIP). Must be 1961-62 or 62-63. Fucking phenomenal.
Pic 10 has Brad Park and Jean Ratelle trying to stuff one in on Dryden. Obviously after the espo trade again so 76 or 77 or so
Pic 11 obviously Guy Lafleur shooting and Bobby Orr trying to block the shot. Great pic. Probably 73-74 or so
Pic 15 wow a young Jaques Plante seeking the puck through the defense, this has to be late 50s
I know ice rinks aren’t naturally white (it’s painted that way) but it’s still jarring to see a photo with a dark grayish ice surface
Wow. Thanks OP. Rangers MTL and Savard or Robinson is about to eat a puck with crappy gear and yes, the shots were hard back then. LaFleur and Bobby Orr diving to block! No helmet of course, these are great shots
I think it’s funny how there are titles under the photos with the team name. LOL, like there aren’t that many back then. We can tell.
They really should dim the lights at games. Play in some dark arenas like in pic 1
All these old footage/ photos look like they were playing in space.
