[Cards Convo] Reported by Bob Nightengale, below are the 4 untouchables and the ones the Cardinals plan to build around for 2024 and beyond. Jordan Walker, Lars Nootbaar, Nolan Arenado, Paul Goldschmidt. Who, in your opinion, should be included in this list?

  1. I can’t fathom Nootbaar being on a list without Donavan and Gorman. I like Nootbaar but come on… what about him is more valuable than Gorman or Donavan? I don’t see it. I guess position wise? We have more infielders than outfielders.

  2. Idk how Noot makes that list. He is slightly above average in many things. But to put him in that company just doesn’t make sense. It’s almost insulting to the other 3.

Also Winn should be included for sure.

  3. Nootbaar shouldn’t be untouchable, tbh. And the only “untouchable” should be Jordan Walker. Even for Goldy and Arenado, you should take a huge package to get them

  4. Gorman and Wynn. Gorman still has so much untapped potential, and his growth has been amazing. Is he always gonna be a streaky hitter? Yea, but goddamn when he is on, he is ON.

  5. Donovan and Gorman are more valuable than Nootbaar. Not sure why he is untouchable. I love his personality and he has good “underlying metrics” but that needs to transition to better on field production imo.

  6. No dude, I’m fucking tired of people saying trade Arenado, I’m totally down for trading Goldy but we have Arenado til 2028 people relax. The untouchables rn should be Arenado, Gorman, Donovan, Winn, and Walker. That’s our whole infield locked down for a long time if walker moves to 1st and then Donnie being the utility man.

  7. Hot take: This year sucks and I hate being a seller

Sure Mo will kill It though lol

  8. Hmm..

I’m Keeping Goldie, Arenado, Winn, and Walker.

    Trading two of:
    Nootbaar
    Carlson
    Burleson
    O’Neil.

    Trading one of:
    Edman
    Donovan
    Gorman

Doing my very best to trade:
    DeJong.

Trading before the deadline at least one, but trying to trade both. (Getting a compensational pick isn’t the worst outcome. But doesn’t help for 2024.)
    Monty
    Flathery

For sure gone by the deadline is:
    Hicks

The guys who contracts are up, I may hold on if nothing blows me away before the deadline and trade in the offseason.

Edman, Donovan, and Gorman and all guys I want to keep. Edman and Donovan can play the outfield. Gorman doesn’t have that versatility. What maters here is what I’m getting back, and if I have any clue on what to do with Contreras. Having Gorman, Contreras, and Walker would be hard to find time at the DH. Putting two of them in the field at all times.

Oh, and if someone blows me away for Goldie I’m doing it.

  9. Tommy Edman. It’s ridiculous that they even had to use him in CENTER FIELD but he definitely held his own. He was great to watch in CF. But I think he’s more valuable than you all think. I feel like this year put such a toll on his body being asked to play two of the top three physically demanding positions (CF & SS, not C) Ain’t no way Donovan performs well at those positions. Which is why he’s hurt right now. He adds so much value to the team but should stay on the dirt. I feel like he’d have a much solid year if he was used at one position. Unfortunately, I feel like they’re gonna be cheap asses and trade Edman because Donovan has 1 year of service time compared to Edman’s 3. Whoever gets Edman will be getting an elite 2B and great SS

  10. How come all i hear is crying about pitching, but no one wants to retain montgomery, who has been one of the better pitchers lately save for his last start

  11. They are foolish not to include Gorman in this group. Former 1st rd pick that is showing marked improvement from last yr.
