The 2023 Quarterback Tiers results are here, complete with commentary from the 50 NFL coaches and executives who were granted anonymity to share unvarnished evaluations. This year, the 50 league insiders who placed 30 veteran quarterbacks into tiers included eight general managers, 10 head coaches, 15 coordinators, 10 executives, four quarterbacks coaches and three involved in coaching/analytics.
**Tier 1**
>A Tier 1 quarterback can carry his team each week. The team wins because of him. He expertly handles pure passing situations. He has no real holes in his game.
Mahomes
Burrow
Josh Allen
Rodgers
Herbert
**Tier 2**
>A quarterback can carry his team sometimes but not as consistently. He can handle pure passing situations in doses and/or possesses other dimensions that are special enough to elevate him above Tier 3. He has a hole or two in his game.
Jalen Hurts
Lamar Jackson
Trevor Lawrence
Dak Prescott
Matt Stafford
Deshaun Watson
Kirk Cousins
**Tier 3**
>A Tier 3 quarterback is a legitimate starter but needs a heavier running game and/or defensive component to win. A lower-volume dropback passing offense suits him best.
Murray
Carr
Jared Goff
Russell Wilson
Tua
Jimmy G
Daniel Jones
Geno Smith
Justin Fields
Ryan Tannehill
Mac Jones
**Tier 4**
8 4th Quarter comebacks last year. Including the largest ever.
The year before with Zimmer I can’t remember exactly how many games he tied up or went ahead in the 4th just for our defense to blow it.
That year felt like the opposite of last. Lost nothing but one score games cause of Zimm and the D
Fair analysis.
What am I missing with Prescott consistently being rated above Cousins while playing at a lower level, all with a better supporting offensive cast?
No way am I putting Watson or Stafford over him at this point either. They both looked like shells of their former selves last year.
I would put Kirk solidly in tier 2. Idk how you say tier 3, bottom 10 run game, bottom 5 defense, and Kirk and the offense get a playoff birth. Isn’t that the definition of carrying a team for most of the season?
Herbert in T1!?
Dak is so overrated
T2 seems fair. He does really weird things sometimes.
Herbert is very overrated. Lawrence has a lot to prove as he had one good year Prescott is not better than Kirk, if anything they are the same. Watson was horrendous last year with the best running back in the league. I do not see anything special in him.
That’s what gets me. The guy is a rockstar then in the playoffs takes a shit.
