[Hoop Collective Podcast] Bottom line is he (Siakam) isn’t super max eligible now and it’s safe to say the reason why he isn’t extended is that he’d be eligible after next season if he makes all-nba and that’s why we’re waiting to see if something gets done here.

  1. Podcast segment notes:

    >Windhorst mentions the front office as indecisive

    >Bontemps says that they hired a rookie coach with a development history so that doesn’t add up with trying to contend

    >All 3 co-hosts agree that OG won’t extend

    >Bontemps says that the Houston contract to Fred to him means that he didn’t want to be in Toronto anymore (3rd season being a team option, less $$ than the Raptors offered)

    >Mentions them as probably around the 22nd best team in the league or so

    >Over/under for the Raptors is 36.5 and they have 10 teams in the east ahead of him in the projected standings

  2. >it’s safe to say the reason why he isn’t extended

It’s not fucking safe to say because the reports are saying the front office hasn’t offered an extension yet.

The reason he hasn’t been extended is because Masai and Friends want to make sure that rebalancing the roster positions (Scottie/Pascal) isn’t worth more than the disappointing trade scenarios.

I don’t think the front office wants Siakam on the team in October, but so far that’s looking better than a return of DeAndre Hunter, THJ and garbage picks.

  3. Something needs to be done before the season starts. Not being good enough to make the playoffs, but not being bad enough to keep our pick is a really disastrous position to be in.

  4. Doesn’t make sense why a team can’t offer a contract now that increases in value if they make all nba…that could solve the gap between parties, if this is true

  5. I highly doubt siakam will wait till next year.. he knows without FVV the chances of making the playoffs are slim and with all nba going positionless next year it’s just soo unlikely he’ll make it.

If raps offer him the max I’m certain he’d take it I just think the raps want to trade him and move into a retool they just haven’t had any good offers..

My bet is he re-signs for the max and raps trade him next summer

  6. It’s hilarious how we hang on every tweet and podcast and take them all as 100% true. Like 2 weeks ago, he would accept any offer from Toronto. Today is he’s waiting to try to get the super max.

If you all would be like me and just not care for any reporter, I’m serious, you’ll be happier!

  7. I am not concerned about Pascal refusing to extend

I am concerned with apparent unanimous opinion OG won’t extend. If that is true he needs to be traded. Love him as a player but risking him walking is a disaster.

  8. All signs points to Siakam waiting for the super max next season.

As a fan this is positive news. Team success is required for All-NBA. A motivated Pascal can do serious damage in the regular season.

  9. I don’t think this is the reason.

The FO *could* offer an extension without super max terms. Or, they could offer an extension on terms that would bump his salary if he does manage to meet Super Max eligibility criteria. He had this in his current contract. It could be negotiated.

It could be that Pascal’s camp has said they only want an extension with super max upgrades if eligible. I doubt it, I feel like we would have heard something about it.

So, the only logical reason there is no extension offer yet is that *they still want to trade him*.

What HCP didn’t mention is that extending Pascal would mean he can’t be traded until deadline.

Also didn’t mention that the moratorium on trading drafted players isn’t up yet.

Everyone should chill with the speculation until mid-august. Then you can panic.

  10. If my projections are right, August 8 is a key date regarding Siakam and his extension. When a player has a pay increase and multiple years added, then the player can’t be traded until 6 months after the contract is signed. (1 year for super max contracts.)

If the Raptor’s intent is to extend and trade him to get a better return, the extension would have to be before August 8th for it to be before the trade deadline or it will have to wait until next summer. Siakam and his agent know this so I bet he won’t sign until after August 8.

  11. Folks are overthinking this. Pascal’s value is lower than it should be so they’re not trading him now. We’re not in a win-now position so we’re not going all in. We don’t have our pick this year so we’re playing a mix of young guys we want to develop and older guys we can’t yet sell for a good price. That makes the team fun to watch and keeps viewership high enough.

If Scottie makes a leap though then this situation might change. If we get a big injury or two then we might try to get our pick back. Is it more complicated than that? It’s okay sometimes to just wait and see. It’s better to make no moves than bad moves.
