Can we win a championship with this style of play?

Taken from NBA.in_depth on IG.

I honestly believe we can win a championship playing this. I understand “Morey ball” is not well liked here. Layups and jack up 3’s doesn’t seem pretty at first glance. But this style isn’t meant for all rosters.

A roster that Boston has is perfect for this approach to the game. Shooters all over the roster. Also there’s not only have guys who are capable of hitting mid ranges when needed, but there’s enough capable defenders on the roster to rely on the other end. This type of play doesn’t need to be the sole reason we win games.

But I’m sure we’re all sick of “on paper” talks anyways. It looks great enough when you draw it up, just hopefully it’s proven on the court this year.

  1. Every game has its own flow and vibe. But wether you want to play this way or not that’s just how modern basketball works. Celtics make conference finals every year at least so you know it works

  2. The _team_ doesn’t think so which is why it traded a guard with shooting accuracy problems for a 7’3” guy who can, on occasion, score from the paint.

The “Joe offense” that some revile was a function of Rob Williams playing a grand total of 824 minutes last season, and Al Horford evolving into a spacing shooter in his dotage.

The “Joe offense” this year will emphasize the 3 while also scoring occasionally in the paint, and doing both at a markedly better efficiency rate now that Smart and his bad shooting nights/decisions are off the team.

  3. It’s worth nothing comparing to regular season and only the 2022-2023 season. What if Miami and Denver had something similar for playoffs and we didn’t? Did the 21-22 Warriors play like that in the regular season and playoffs? Did the 20-21 bucks? The 19-20 lakers?

The sample size would still be too small but this is extremely small.

  4. Tatum needs a mid range shot so when he’s missing the 3s he can move in a bit. If he has a mid range shot he doesn’t use it much. Pierce had the mid range fall away and no one could stop it. Bird had one too. If he can develop one it’s 30 per night.

  5. If the team can actually shoot well from three, mainly talking about Jaylen and Jayson on that one.

Honestly JB and JT need to be midrange threats as well. I’m not saying we absolutely abandon our offensive play style, since we were one game out of a finals trip.

But, come playoff time you need dirty buckets in the post / mid range some times. Sure they are not analytically efficient for the most part, but having the ability to get those types of buckets opens up the rest of the floor.

Though, maybe adding a strong post presence in KP could be enough to open things up for us offensively. I’m very excited to see how we look this year as a result of that.

  6. These 5 teams all watched the Finals from the same place I did, the couch. GS could win this way, then again they have 2 of the best shooters to ever do it and also had KD for a minute. We’re not prime GS, not even close, we need to find our own way.

  7. The Jays NEED to attack the paint and work the midrange/post more in order to win a chip. Porzingis needs to work from the post a lot, as a scorer and facilitator. Mid range and paint needs to be the focus, collapse the defense, move off bal, either get easy dunks and lay ups or wind up with wide open 3s. You can’t just walk into every game thinking “we need to shoot 40+ 3s to win”

  8. Yes. The Mavs, Bucks and Blazers offenses were great last season. And the Houston squad that nearly beat the KD warriors played the same way.

That being said, you have to adjust. If you get rattled by a zone defense or the threes are just bricking, you need to be comfortable changing tactics.

  9. Is it crazy to think brown will take less 3’s in consolidation with KP if he’s the guy hitting them? Then brown can kill with his mid range/driving the lane and Tatum can, well, just be Tatum?

  10. No. Unless we have Steph and or Klay, this doesn’t work. An occasional three, sure, but we’ve got to work on scoring in the paint and getting rebounds.

  11. It’s weird that we went from wanting Tatum to shoot less 2’s to him shooting ZERO 2’s. Sometimes that’s all the defense gives you

  12. The rockets nearly did it with a percentage that I’d bet is higher than that so yes as long as pingus stays healthy

  13. it’s brutal basketball to watch and a big reason why we lost games in the playoffs against winnable teams. we lived by the three and when it wasn’t hitting we didn’t adapt

  14. Here’s the thing. The J’s, especially Brown, take too many bad shots for me. When they’re making them, we win by 40+. I like the idea of Brown and Tatum slowing WAY down on contested 3s and just attacking the paint and working on a mid range post game. If they could develop a Dirk Nowitzki style game, they’d win a ship in 16 games.

  15. I felt like every championship team had someone that can punish people in the midrange. Really hope Tatum can get back that game.

  16. Yeah, or some other team will win with this formula of really good offense instead.
