  1. Mitchell and Brunson are built similarly in height and frame. They are both leading scorers on their respective teams and can play off the ball. For those reasons, one could argue paying both players wouldn’t make sense for the Knicks. Mitchell had hoped the Utah Jazz would trade him to the Knicks last summer — when Brunson signed there — and was surprised New York didn’t offer the assets the Jazz were seeking to make the deal happen. He welcomed the trade to the Cavs when they did pony up with an offer of a bevy of players and picks.

Brunson and the Knicks beat Mitchell and the Cavs in the first round of the playoffs in April, then Mitchell turned down an invite from Team USA to join Brunson this summer.

Mitchell hasn’t said he still wants to play in New York, nor has he commented recently on his future in Cleveland, but the speculation isn’t likely to subside unless he and the Cavs agree on an extension.

“It’s impossible not to see things — rumors and all the stuff that comes up on Twitter and all that stuff every single day is always on TV,” Brunson said. “There’s always possibilities when you hear about that stuff.
