> Let’s start here: Sources say the 24-year-old Washington, who is a restricted free agent, is hoping for a contract around $20 million annually. The Hornets have reportedly been unwilling to give Washington the long-term contract he is seeking, and the two sides are currently in a contract stalemate. If a financial deal can’t be reached, with Charlotte unwilling to budge on its stance or Washington agreeing to a shorter deal for less money, the Hornets’ options aren’t very appealing.

> Washington could sign the qualifying offer, play out the year and then Charlotte risks losing him as an unrestricted free agent next summer — the path Washington’s teammate Miles Bridges is taking. The Hornets could also work out a sign-and-trade.

> Sources say even though Cleveland has expressed interest in acquiring Washington, and there’s a belief it is lurking, there haven’t been any extensive, detailed or meaningful trade discussions with Charlotte at this point.

  1. Would the hold up be related to the amount of time that is needed after a player signs their contract? I don’t see CHA being all that interested in Rubio + Wade and 2nd rounders. But I could see them interested in Rubio/Wade+ Niang and 2nd rounders.

  2. Without trading Allen, it has to be Okoro, Rubio and one of Wade or Merrill. If its Allen, its just a straight up trade unless we give him more the $20 million a year.

Personally, I’m fine with either trade because the teams gets better either way. PJ is a stud and would fit in well as either the 3rd big or a starter. Good defense, promising scoring potential (Awful shot distribution disguising decent efficiency) and good playmaking. His team was so bad last year that you have to take the stats with a grain of salt but his career numbers as a 4 year player are very promising.

However, there are downsides because of what the Cavs will send out. If its package 1, the Cavs lose their best perimeter defender who was also a low usage guy that fit decently with the core 4. Levert and Strus as your top perimeter options isn’t very encouraging. If its package 2, the Cavs have next to no rebounding. I believe PJ is a better rebounder than his numbers show but it would be hard for he and Mobley to deal with Embiid, Robinson and Giannis/Lopez. It would be a difficult task for them to coach around or improve enough organically to make it a non-issue.
