[Pelissero] QB Bailey Zappe is re-signing to the #Patriots practice squad, per source. Zappe was in-demand after clearing waivers, with offers from seven other teams. But the former fourth-round pick decided to return to New England, where he was 2-0 as the starter his rookie year.

  1. Not sure why those teams didn’t just…claim him on waivers. He would’ve been cheaper.

  2. So their belief that we wasn’t a waiver risk is vindicated. I’m still very curious to see if they sign another QB, as both Reiss and Giardi have hinted.

  3. /r/NFL is going to lose it now that it’s clear that BB wasn’t completely off his rocker lmao

  4. Not surprising he chose to stick around when his other options were to go to another team’s PS. Like… may as well make the same amount in the system you’re used to and keep your family in one spot. I’d be curious to hear if anyone offered him the chance at being the actual QB2 but the only place I can think of would be somewhere like Arizona.

  5. If BB had put Tyquon on IR before the cutdown, it would’ve ended his season. But now he can be placed on the 4 week minimum IR, if I understand the rules correctly. So BB may have cut Zappe as a procedural move to protect defensive bubble players like Wilson and Wade, until he can move Tyquon to the shorter term IR. Then Zappe can be restored to the roster.

The Pats realized that it wasn’t likely any other team would want Zappe as their #2 QB.

  6. This was probably just a move like they pulled with Folk and Nordin. If they were confident that Zappe would clear, this would allow them to carry someone else to IR with an option to return, while not exposing that player to waivers.

  7. I think it’s interesting 1) no one wanted to pick him up on waivers with his current contract but were interested enough to make offers to him as a free agent and 2) Bill took a bet on that and was dead on the money.

  8. Pretty sure the other offers are likely for him to be on PS, which means potentially far less lucrative or to be 3rd string. The situation in NE is what’s best for him for sure. Knows the facility and coaches and system already, and is an active on game day player, rather than a permanent PS stash on other teams while he learns new systems and facilities. No brainer to come back once waivers cleared.
