Carl Hagelin retires at 35 due to an eye injury

  1. I remember watching Hagelin skate circles around the Penguins when he was in New York, especially during those playoff series. I remember thinking, “*THAT* is what Pittsburgh needs.”

Then he was traded and signed in Anaheim and that was that. At least he was in the West.

It is wild how minor changes can completely change the perception of a team. David Perron was a good player, but he’s got concrete in his skates. Rob Scuderi was once a defensive stalwart, but the puck just lived in the defensive zone when he was out there. Bringing Trevor Daley and Hagelin changed everything with that Penguins team. It sent them into overdrive.

Forever grateful to have gotten to watch Hagelin help turn the Penguins around.

  2. Really effective player, not the kind of guy who’s on billboards but the player you need to win. Started watching hockey at Yost when he was at Michigan and had a soft spot for him.

  3. Was the eye injury recent? I hadn’t heard about him in awhile and didn’t know if it was because of that. Wish him well! LGR

  4. I love the photos he shared, Penguins winning the Stanley Cup, Rangers winning the Prince of Wales, and then Washington having 6 players in the penalty box.

Edit: Will add this here, one thing I remember hearing about back when the Penguins acquired Hagelin. Hornqvist went to Rutherford immediately and asked if it was true because Horny and Hags were really close friends.

Hornqvist was devastated when the Penguins traded Hagelin away.

Hornqvist and Hagelin now both retire the same offseason.

  5. The Streets won’t forget Carl Hagelin, his call up to the Rangers in 2011-2012 was so massive for solidifying their amazing bottom 6 that gelled so well with the Torts system. He was the cap casualty that hurt the most for me, what I would have given to watch him lift a cup with Hank.

Seeing him win 2 in Pittsburgh was amazing because it felt like for the first time the league was taking notice of just how integral Hagelin was to successful playoff teams depth scoring and penalty killing.

We were younger then, I remember everyone in my high school calling him Carl Swagelin because of his flow. I hope he can get the help he needs for his eye and enjoys retirement in Sweden!

  6. My most memorable Hagelin moment was when Tortorella went on that rant about how he “stinks on the powerplay”

  7. Seemed all but inevitable. A class act through and through, even as a Penguin. All the best, Hags.

  8. Watching that Rangers team in the 2012 playoffs and I guess the few years after he stood out to me. Wasn’t the most productive guy but he was fast as fuck and all over the place.

  9. Nice career hags! Can’t help but wonder if his visor placement is the cause for it – it’s always tilted up so high.

  10. Best of luck to you, Hags! Always a true BLUE NY Ranger in my book. Without your health, you have nothing.

  11. My favorite – loved watching him skate! Met him a few times, he was always pleasant – and his hair was even more amazing in person!

  12. I remember when he went out the Caps PK went to absolute shit and it was very obvious how he impacted the game in ways I hadn’t considered before. Always enjoyed watching him play and knowing about his eye injury has definitely made me concerned when I’ve seen others wearing their face shield the same way.

  13. Damn, just realized dude got to play with Crosby, Ovechkin, and Lundqvist. That’s pretty cool. I wonder if anyone got to play with Gretzky, Lemieux, and Roy back in the 90’s?

  14. That Hagelin, Bonino, Kessel line in 2016 still haunts my dreams. Congrats on the career, Carl

  15. Man he used to be so lethal against us in the postseason and then he joined us. Most weren’t big fans of his tenure here but I always appreciated his work ethic

  16. Guy was an absolute menace on the penalty kill…. and not really much else, but he did that role exceptionally well and he was a big reason the Caps PK was so good those years. I hated seeing all the breakaways he got only to just fumble the puck away.

  17. We never got to see it because Hagelin was never going to be sent to an all-star game – but I genuinely think at his peak, Carl Hagelin was *the* fastest player in the NHL.
