  1. Dan Campbell is typically known for his long-winded responses, often delving into significant detail when addressing questions. However, that wasn’t the case when asked for his thoughts on Tirico’s comments. On this occasion, Campbell opted for brevity.

“Well, is there an asterisk next to our 1-0?” Campbell quipped during a Friday afternoon conference call.

Tirico _(tried)_ to defend himself against the growing criticism on social media.

“If you have a problem with the word ‘asterisk,’ that’s a very legitimate complaint,” Tirico told The Detroit News on Friday afternoon. “However, it should be in context.

“If you want to take out the middle of the comment and make it the whole comment, then you don’t understand properly how to attribute things.”

    (So) here’s Tirico’s quote:

“We saw the Chiefs go into Foxborough in 2016 (2017) and win on Opening Night, and that announced to everyone that the Kansas City Chiefs were going to be a factor,” Tirico stated during the postgame broadcast. “This comes with an asterisk due to the absence of Chris Jones and Travis Kelce, but after what you saw at the end of last year and what you saw tonight, the team in blue and silver is for real.”

[From Heavy.com] Many fans joined Campbell in pushing back on the claim, with some pointing out that all teams have to deal with injuries over the course of an NFL season.

“Tirico calling that an asterisk win is a joke. Chris Jones holding out isn’t a Detroit problem. Kelce being hurt? Injuries happen. Give credit where credit is due,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

Campbell said after the game that he knew his team was up to the task against the defending Super Bowl champions.

“I didn’t learn anything, I got verification on what I already knew, and this is a resilient team,” Campbell said, via ESPN. “It already was a resilient team and we added pieces to that resilient team, so we’re built to handle some stuff and we did that today against a very good opponent.”

  2. Nitpick with this article, Mike Tirico is not a Michigan native. He only lives here now and he does not think of the lions as his hometown team. Also, he sounds super salty in that last. quote defending his stupid comment.

  3. I had a similar response to my brother-in-law, a lifelong Chiefs fan. I said “I looked at the standings and your excuses weren’t on there.”

  4. Jamo and Kelce were both out.

Chris Jones is a contract dispute. That’s internal chiefs turmoil, can’t hold that against the Lions.

  5. Great game, I think the sky’s the limit after a great performance like that. You can point to all the caveats like many people seem to be doing; the dropped passes, it being the first game, the guys who were out, etc. But at the end of the day, there were a ton of uncalled penalties against their O-line so fuck-off with any excuses. The offense will get better, the defense will get better, beating the Chiefs is a thing this team is capable of so there’s no reason they can’t win the division, win in the playoffs, etc. It’s fucking exciting man, I know I should be tempering my expectations and expect disappointment but fuck it, if Payton’s in I’m in. Let’s fucking go.

  6. It’s such a stupid comment. What if Kelce didn’t hurt his knee in practice but on the 2nd play of the game? Is that also deserving of an asterisk? Where’s the line and who gets to draw it?

As for Jones, that deserves no mention at all. That’s a roster/salary decision by the Chiefs.

  7. Am I missing something? The Chiefs still had the BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD on the field at HOME. ESPN glazing Mahomes so hard, I’ve never seen so many excuses made for a supposed GOAT. Tom Brady could win with practice squad guys

  8. I think it’s bullshit that we get an asterisk because KC doesn’t want to pay their 3rd best player and bullshit because they injured their 2nd best player in practice. Last time i checked the NFL is a next-man-up league. If you don’t have depth then goodluck. If they didn’t think they could win without those guys they should have forfeited before the game started but clearly that wasn’t the case.

  9. Wow can’t believe tirico doubled down. Fair enough buddy keep that same
    Energy all year

  10. In the 2017 game against the Chiefs the Patriots were without their leading receiver, Julian Edelman, and their best defensive player Dont’a Hightower left in the 3rd quarter.

Nobody remembers, cares, or makes these kind of excuses. There is not an asterisk mark next to the Chiefs win.

Turdrico undermines his own argument with his example.

  11. So do we get a 2nd asterisk because Jamo and Moseley were out for us now? That how it gonna work now? Games don’t fully count unless every player is active? There will be like 4 clean games across the league all season then.

  12. I’ve met Mike Tirico a few times (used to ref his kids soccer games in AA). He loves Michigan and respects the Detroit teams. If you see his interviews, he often claims Michigan as his home (even though only his wife is technically from there). And on every broadcast, if a player is from Ann Arbor or near it, he’d a make comment saying “I watched his high school games”

I’m very surprised by this comment tbh. I look at it as going with the national narrative that the lions are still a cute little story and aren’t serious yet. Just want to use this as motivation going forward, onto next week vs Seattle

  13. If the Chiefs won, would there be an asterisk due to their right tackle being allowed to cheat all night?

  14. I heard a lot of people talking about how Toney’s drops were a main factor too. Yet they leave out that MJJ had 2 crucial drops of his own. Every team has shit they have to deal with. We were missing a key player. We had a veteran drop the ball multiple times. We didn’t get away with a **false start on every single play.**

Tbh I prefer it this way. Let them keep doubting us.

  15. If the Lions had Amon Ra and Goff out, and the Chiefs won, nobody on earth would be saying the Chiefs win had an asterisk on it.

    No asterisk. We beat them.

  16. fun fact I realized this morning –

lions currently have the longest win streak in the NFL counting only playoffs and reg season.

unless I missed someone, but I don’t think I did

I realized, with detroit beating KC opening game of the season, every single playoff team from last year lost their most recent game. I figured the lions at 3 wins MUST be close then to the longest streak

  17. He’s a clown 🤡. Even if he thought that way, at least wait a day or two to say your idiotic statement. Didn’t even give fans a moment to enjoy and celebrate naturally in the moment.

  18. Eh, I’m ok with what Tirico said in response. He admitted that “asterisk” probably wasn’t the right word – It’s the connotation that comes with “asterisk” that’s really the issue since it’s seeking to de-legitimize the winning team. But his whole quote acknowledges that the Lions are a real team even if the Chiefs weren’t full strength and aren’t at that Super Bowl winning level yet. I think it’s just phrased poorly both in the initial moment and in the response.
