Way back in 2008 I landed my dream internship with the Baltimore Orioles team photographer and still to this day consider it one of the best jobs I’ve ever had.
I was going to college at UMBC studying fine art photography and when I saw the position get posted I figured I’d give it a shot despite not having any prior experience (or interest tbh) in sports photography. To my surprise I landed the gig and thus began my brief but dream-like experience working as a team photographer for one of my favorite sports teams.
I’m a Maryland native and lifelong Orioles fan so as a 20 year old it took everything I had to keep my heart rate down each time I drove up to the warehouse or walked down to the clubhouse to get prepared for a game. It was the tough days so games weren’t always exactly nailbiters but it was still so exciting to be out on the field and just walking through the stadium, especially since I had a pretty much an all access pass to the entire yard.
Thinking back today I probably didn’t soak in as much as I should have – I was a very naive kid and tried to play everything cool despite my inner, even younger self screaming internally. And while I learned a ton, my sports photography didn’t exactly take off (although I had a few end up in the Orioles magazine and also helped out with a Markakis, Scott, Jones cover which was an amazing shoot), but either way, it was one of the best experiences of my life and one that I will cherish forever, especially considering where the team is today (and back in 2014 too!)
I like them! My favorite is Jones running to 1B – thank you for sharing them.
#40 is that Cabrera? It’s been so long. I forgot he existed. I thought he was going to be great but I was just a kid to be fair
Sorry don’t know why my text is so large seemingly
These are really cool.
Time dilates, didn’t think the ugly Hilton was around in 08 I was 18 feels like a long time ago for me
Man this has such The Wire nostalgia vibes. Half expecting to see McNulty in the stands in one of these pics.
I low key loved that 2008 team. We had some fun moments with a young AJ, Luke Scott, flat brim George Sherrill, and a blossoming Nick Markakis.
