  1. I received these books as a gift and thought the titles summed up the nature of our existence as Chargers fans pretty well.

“Missed it by That Much – A History of the San Diego Chargers”

Also, the blurb on the back of the first book is uncannily appropriate for every era of the team.

“In 1961, the Chargers fled down the coast from empty stadiums and creditors in Los Angeles for the lush, uh, dirt of Balboa Stadium in San Diego. Thus began one of the stranger jouneys of any NFL teams.

The Chargers were in San Diego from 1961 through 2016. They had good days, They had bad days. They had Dan Fouts. They had Ryan Leaf. They had Phillip Rivers. They had Craig Whelihan. They had John Hadl. They had Steve Tensi.

But always, no matter who they had, they seemed to just miss being the big fish.

In this first volume, the dramatic swings of the Chargers’ franchise are striking. From the glories of their only championship in 1968, they fell to become the butt of the sports world by the Nightmare Season of 1973.

The Chargers could never quite get over the top. They also seemed to miss by just that much. And with their move to Los Angeles for 2017, the closure on their San Diego chapter seems assured. Thus, it’s time to figure out who they were and what made them fun and abysmal…frequently at the same time.”
