Who will be Giants’ next manager? Bob Melvin, Buster Posey among possibilities

  1. Buster Posey is pure click bait. You’re better off not wasting your breath on it.

He has shown no desire to manage. He seems to have no interest in being *THAT* involved.

  2. The guy who retired two years ago to spend more time with his family is not going to be the new manager. I hate how rumors like this are so common in sports.

  3. I’m curious how much Buster had to say in all this. When he moved back to the bay it seemed to me that he was gonna be way more involved. I doubt he will manage but I can see him being heavily involved in establishing that winning character that the team needs.

  4. How about asking Ohtani who he wants?

Edit: If Ohtani and Yamamoto want to bring Sadaharu Oh out of retirement to manage, who says no?

  5. If it’s Bob Melvin I’m gonna cry.

It’s never gonna be Posey. Guy retired cuz he wanted to spend time with his family, he’s not committing to spending 4 months on the road.

  6. Buster is the one guy the Giants could hire as manager that might rejuvenate the fanbase and get more butts in the seats

  7. As a Giants fan, I’d love Buster to manage, even though I know it will not happen.

As a Buster fan, I don’t want Buster to manage. He wants to be with his family, not take on a job that’s perhaps even more demanding than being a player. Let the guy spend time with the wife and kids. He’s given us everything—it’s his turn to be happy.

  8. Bob Melvin just coached as bad of a season as the Giants had but with the roster that all the Fire Kapler/Farhan people want. Buster Posey has never coached at any level. Great ideas everyone!

  9. As much as I respect Posey, bringing in a guy with zero coaching experience is not a good idea.

  10. Can’t be Buster: People will see through trying to blame him for a mediocre season when they field an offense of mostly part time unpaid interns next year.

  11. Posey would be nice, but if it ever happens, it will be way down the line. Melvin might be an option if the Padres decide to stick with Preller over Melvin. Joe Maddon would be good too. If not, why not Ron Wotus?

On top of that, give Barry a coaching role or some sort of special advisor role. Proximity to the players would do wonders

  12. This is an admittedly crazy take, but could hiring a guy like Maddon help in our recruitment efforts with Shohei and possibly even get a guy like Trout to ask for a trade here? I’m not big on Maddon like I was a few years ago (my preference is Melvin), but I hope the FO realizes the effect that a manager could have on getting bigger names to join the club, which will in turn rejuvenate the fanbase.

  13. There isn’t really a great track record of great players being great managers. Thinking recently, Ryne Sandberg being an example. Matt Williams didn’t fare so well as a head coach. Joe Maddon never played in the majors. Dusty Baker I suppose could be viewed as an exception. Was Joe Torre considered a great player?

Posey may eventually be a manager some day, but I would assume we would see him in a minor league dugout in some capacity first.

  14. I’m fairly certain Buster cannot manage while he is part owner, there is a rule against that. It was discussed when he became part owner and I think he explicitly said he doesn’t want to manage anytime soon so he can spend time with his family, and that he can’t anyway as part owner.

  15. Why do people think Posey is even a possibility lol? He literally ended his career early to have more time with his family. Yet you think he is going to pick up a job 2 years later that will require him to be away from his family even more than when he was a player?

He has never once in his entire career expressed he wanted to be a manager one day.

  16. there are too many people who won’t listen to buster about wanting to be with his family, and it needs to stop

  17. I’d love to see Buster there, but look at David Ross — he was a mega-hero in Chicago, and now… well, they don’t *hate* him, probably, but the shine’s worn off.

Managing is a different game. Lots of mediocre players become great managers, and vice versa.

  18. Genuine question: would being a part owner be a conflict of interest? Outside of Posey’s desire to be at home with family, could Posey even be allowed to manage if he wanted to?

  19. I don’t think Buster will want to do that, but if he does, then they should give him the job. I think he would be an outstanding manager.
