Fantastic analysis: Mike Wahle & Andy Herman on Packers coaching

  1. I may not agree with everything but if you want a detailed look at why some of the things (poor run defence, poor run offense, too many mental mistakes etc.) that we’ve seen over the last two years haven’t changed, this video explains why.

  2. Wahle has his own podcast, and it has a great breakdown on the Lions game. Just bad coaching and it’s very evident.

I do agree with the point that, when a team is trying to be draft and develop, you need to coach them up. The lack of detail is so telling of this staff, you’re either coaching it or condoning it. Lack of gap discipline, not being physical at the point of attack, etc.

  3. Just finished listening, and Mike and Andy were spot on with their analysis. My biggest takeaway is that the problems are not necessarily scheme and even the players executing, they (the problems) are more systemic a reflection of a lack of organizational philosophy.

Thus, I feel really conflicted on how the Packers will fare moving forward. I think MLF has a fantastic scheme and would love for him to stick around, but he has really shown since he has been here that his ceiling is really at the offensive coordinator position. His flaws as a head coach become more and more apparent, this is not only a trend post-Aaron Rodgers but since he was hired. You just can’t succeed if you are not holding guys accountable, not putting guys in places they can succeed, not giving the players the tools they need to succeed the positions where they are in, and not making adjustments when it is clear the product on the field is not working.

I don’t want to get too down because of what we have seen from the last 9 quarters or so, and yes this is a young team, but these flaws are not going to go away unless Matt has some kind of epiphany.

So the question becomes, “Is Matt LaFleur the answer as the head coach?” Given that we continue to see the same problems on this team manifest year after year, I’m starting to lean towards thinking he is not. Which is a real shame because he has such a brilliant offensive mind.

We have a mini-bye now, followed by the actual bye after the LV game, so now is the perfect opportunity for MLF to reflect and adjust.

  4. I listened to this earlier today, thought it was a great discussion. I absolutely would like to see less of an emphasis on scheme and more on being consistent in fundamentals and execution. Find something the team does really well and make it a foundational piece of the offense. The specials are fun and all of that but you need some bread and butter stuff, things you can consistently lean on.

For instance, in the early years of LaFleur’s tenure they ran the crap out of mesh concepts and mixed it up on the backside to keep defenses on their toes. It’s a hard play to defend and easy to complete because of the natural pick you create with the two crossers. That’s simple stuff that would really complement the speed and quickness of guys like Watson and Reed.
