Lets give it up for Derrick Barnes – The most vastly improved player of The BNL

D Barnes is currently ranked 22nd on PFF linebacker grades for 2023 with an above 70 rating in overall defense + pass & run defense.
This man has risen to the challenge to learn a new position and gain a starting spot on The Lions.

I remember when Kelvin Sheppard said in (I think) the middle of last season “Derrick Barnes is coming.” The issue, according to Shep, was always from the neck up as, “Derrick has absolutely everything you could ask for in an NFL linebacker from the neck down.”
A week ago the pride of Detroit YouTube channel did a bit on Barnes and made the point that each off season/training camp there’s someone who’s turning heads or looks so much better, etc. But to your point, OP, the play on the field during the season rarely matches the hype from camp. Until this season and Barnes. He’s looked so much better this season it’s been fun to watch and I’m so happy he’s finally putting it all together.
Interesting the difference 1 year can make in a room. Last year heading into the year we many felt LB was our weakest positional group with. Now have 4 guys that could start in the NFL.
