So… how ’bout that new stadium, eh?

To the Rays fans in St. Pete who really do want this team to stay and succeed, I do feel for you. However, with this proposed $1.3 billion new stadium still in the same zip code, I don’t see things improving from an attendance or local involvement standpoint any time soon.

  1. It doesn’t really matter. The Rays aren’t staying in St. Pete to sell more tickets, they’re staying in St Pete to be the main benefactor in a $6.5 billion development project.

  2. Stu doesn’t care about attendance, he cares about tax breaks. Simple as.

Dude’s not even a Rays fan, he just happens to own the Rays

  3. Just sell the rays already and move them to another state those 2 playoff games this year was pathetic. You can’t even break 20k for the playoffs

  4. MLB could also stop doing midweek day games in the effing postseason. So dumb. May not “fix” the issue, but I’m sure they’d get way more people to a playoff game

  5. It’s frustrating to have to keep saying this but attendance matters to fans and players but not ownership.

The St. Pete stadium deal is very favorable to ownership. The media deals they negotiate are also favorable to both the Rays ownership and MLB ownership as a whole. Despite what reddit will tell you, its a money printing operation, even if attendance is bottom tier.

They chose St. Pete because it was a better deal ownership will make more money off of, not because they believe it is going to significantly improve attendance.
