The perception of Poeltl seems similar to how people viewed Gasol. The numbers aren’t flashy, there’s not many big highlight blocks, but the value comes in defensive positioning and offensive malleability.
Poeltl isn’t the defender that Gasol was, that’s a very high bar, but he’s a much better defender than often given credit for. He’s able to move well and defend the PnR, while positioning himself to alter shots at the time, even if he’s not necessarily blocking them. On offence Poeltl doesn’t have the 3 ball that Marc had, but he passes extremely well, has some of the best hands in the league, and is able to finish around the basket at a great rate. He knows where he needs to be to help the offence and is a great connective piece.
If we succeed this year, it’ll be in large part due to Yak’s contributions.
