[Pompey] “I think I’ve always wanted to play that way,” Joel Embiid said of sharing the ball in Nick Nurse’s system. “I never liked just being an iso player. I don’t think that’s the right way to play, and I don’t think that’s the right way to win. So I like the system …”

Embiid was obviously rusty, missing shots he normally would make. But he was extremely unselfish, moving the ball. He also stretched the floor on some positions. And Embiid set screens and played solid defense.

“I think I’ve always wanted to play that way,” he said of sharing the ball. “I never liked just being an iso player. I don’t think that’s the right way to play, and I don’t think that’s the right way to win. So I like the system.

“Isn’t all about me, like today there were a couple of passes. Guys weren’t expecting it, and I’m telling them, I’m like, ‘When you cut, you got to cut hard. You got to cut to mean it. And you got to be ready to receive the ball.’”

But Embiid intends to continue to pass the ball all season. He wants to look for his teammates, play as a team and keep moving the ball.

“Hopefully,” he said, “that helps us win

  1. Since when does a NN offense feature lots of ball movement? Raptors were nothing but isos the past two seasons

  2. I’m ready for a distributing Embiid. The turnover numbers will be off the charts.

  3. It’s hilarious reading these posts and then going to the Raptors sub where they’re celebrating getting rid of Nurse and his iso-heavy offense.

  4. I remember when Embiid was starting out, a lot of people praised his playmaking. Idk, if a coach chose to build a system around that and had him focus on it, I’m sure it would be a good offense. Would also lead to the team not looking as lost when teams are going all out ‘stop Embiid’ mode

  5. Lol Nurse all of a sudden created a free flowing offense? Embiid just happy he got his mvp and is satisfied.

  6. Buy in from Joel was never gonna be in question, really. He’s a better playmaker than we’ve seen of him and always believed that but it hadn’t really been honed or utilized. He knows he’s gonna get his touches and get his shots and it’ll make he and the team better when everyone is engaged on offense. Never expected anything different from him.

Buy in from Harden is what I’m more curious about.

  7. Raptors fans are going to say Nurse is all about isos but it’s not really the case. We were 8th in the league in passes made last year, but we regressed to one on one play in a lot of situations because our lack of shooting/spacing and dribble penetration made it difficult to break down the defense. With different personnel Nurse should be able to find better solutions.

I’m hopeful that Darko can find some creative solutions in the half court because our core personnel hasn’t changed that much. Early returns from the preseason have been good though.

  8. “I love passing the ball”

After the 200th time of seeing Tobias Harris clank a open 3 let’s see how much he still loves sharing the ball.

  9. Safe bet as a coach to play to your best player’s strengths. Embiid’s iso heavy game has been a staple of his personal game since he established himself in the league. And he’s had previous coaches to Doc who’ve also relied on that iso game. Safe to assume that his coaches have adapted their tactics to suit him and his strengths.

On top of that, in the last 18 months they’ve also had one of the best iso players of the last decade as the lead guard. Doc’s offence was always going to rely heavily on their strengths. Imagine asking Embiid and Harden who are notorious ball stoppers to start moving and cutting constantly… Lol.

  10. I had a coach stop and tell us once that the purpose of the offense wasn’t to run the offense. It’s to get good shots and put the ball in the hoop.

I thought that was a great line, and young players often forget that. They’re focused on “I’m supposed to do this then that.”

The point of the cut isn’t just to run cardio.

  11. Ball movement is always great to watch in the regular season. Then the post season comes around and by then, all the opposing teams have done their scouting and know your best offensive sets and actions. It goes right back to isos and pick and rolls

  12. This man saying this is hilarious. I watched you refuse to dive hard off pick and rolls, opting for ISOs at the top of key making easy for Boston to trap you lol

  13. I mean look at this thumbnail. He’s elbowing Capela in the face yet EMBIID is the one acting hurt with a bitch expression on. This dude sucks

  14. embiid tryin to blame the coach again but anyone that watches the sixers knows this dude holds the ball and refuses to pass out of double teams unless hes on the verge of turning the ball over or that he barely set his screens just so he can slip them really quick so he can post up and play iso. the more i listen to embiid the more i start to dislike him lol.

  15. it will be nice to see embiid in an offense that has at least some sembelence of a gameplan

  16. good to see nick with a new approach ,i guess he learned from his time in TO always gotta be growing as a coach
