Malcolm Rodriguez relished new role on offense: ‘It felt good to hit somebody’

  1. Unable to find former starting linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez playing time on defense, the … Lions (gave) him a shot on offense against the Baltimore Ravens (at) fullback.

“We think there is a lot of flexibility with him,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said. “How do we maximize the roster … we felt like, ‘Hey, man, let’s give Rodrigo a go at fullback.’ We know he’s going to (be active for) the game, because he plays as a core special teams player. We just wanted to get him more involved.”

It was only a handful of snaps, but Rodriguez relished the opportunity to help the team in a new and different way.

“It felt good to hit somebody,” Rodriguez said. “I haven’t played offense since high school. I’ll do whatever I can to help the team.”

In high school, Rodriguez played quarterback, throwing for more than 6,000 yards during his career.

As for blocking, (Rodriguez) said, “Been blocking on special teams all year, so I’m like you know what? Let’s line up and see what I’ve got.”

He only practiced the position for the first time this week.

“It gives us some variability at fullback with Cabinda out,” quarterback Jared Goff said. “He handled it well throughout the week and didn’t seem to miss a beat today.”

BJ needs to dial up some crazy trickery to get Rodrigo a pass play

Edit: While thinking about this again. Run him in a wildcat formation, a direct snap with Sewell as an eligible receiver on the end and watch chaos reign

  3. Not uncommon to have a depth LB turn to a utility man on ST and Offense as an FB.

  4. I knew Rod was due for something special. The team kinda sees him as a culture guy, social media team loves him.

  5. Somebody on this sub mentioned last week they’d like to see Rodrigo play some FB, guess they got their wish quick.
