Gru as second goalie?

  1. I don’t think a hierarchy really fits this team, I think it’s a tandem at this point. Hak did have Gru as top goalie the first season then saw that it didn’t work out and aside from a period where he started Martin Jones because the offense picked up with him in net (unclear to me whether it’s correlation or causation) he has gone the tandem route ever since. Some teams (like Edmonton last year haven’t kept up this year) had their backup become a starter due to a large gap in performance, but that’s not a factor for us. And on a personal level (not directed at you OP) I just don’t get why so many people want one goalie to be “better” when we need both being at their best and when both are so differently skilled and so valuable. It would be a huge waste of talent to have either of these guys on the bench 80% of the time when they could be staying fresh and helping us win games.

That said, if we make the playoffs, expect to see Grubauer unless he has a dramatic dropoff in performance over the course of the season
