Game Notes: Lakers v Magic (11/4/23)

These are my game notes. Use them for discussion, disagreement, confirmation, eye test recap, whatever.

********

Overall: Ham used the 3 big lineup in 1Q, but it didn’t work – 7 TOs and stagnant offense. We lost because of 2nd chance points – Magic had 26 2nd chance points in 1H. Other than AD and Wood (occasionally), no one else boxed out or competed for rebounds. Knew we lost the game a few mins before end of 3Q with consec misses by Hayes, DLO, and Hayes followed by a Jingles 3.

– AD: Is it possible that AD is even better on D this year? Block party – his defense even sparked mini comeback at the end. Realized halfway thru 1Q that the Magic can’t guard him, but he got no help. Don’t recall seeing any shots outside paint (saw him pass up a bunch of outside shots) – ruins spacing.

– Bron: Picked up where he left off with his shot. Kinda passive until late 2H, but too late.
Got his average at the end.

– AR: Quiet 1Q and then pair of 3s in 2Q – good to see % going up. Had a good offensive game but it’s apparent how physically weak he is on defense. He continues to get attacked and DLO can’t help.

– DLO: Played well on O to start but cooled off and then went ice cold. Defense was fine, not great.

– Max: good defensive energy. Has a nose for rebounding. Caused multiple turnovers and missed shots. Best game of the season for him.

– Hayes: Got foul happy early.

– Wood: Did his job (spaced and secondary rim protection) but nothing really memorable.

– Cam: His shots always clank so hard – he’s got loud bricks. Again, he should never dribble. Also, did he get 2 3-second calls, ummm, why?? Poor defensive awareness and fouling. Bad game.

  1. I feel like we have to do enough sample size to know that we cannot start dlo and Austin at the same time…when vando comes back, someone has to be benched. And at this point I prefer bron at point.

  2. In my overall, I meant to say James, not Wood re rebounding. Cant modify post for some reason.

  3. Rebounding was the issue tonight. Wood and Hayes combined for 3 rebounds. Gotta box out and grab those boards.

  4. D’Lo played all the minutes with the 3 big lineup that went -16 in 4 minutes. Outside of that trash fire, he was liveable. Would have been pretty good if his shot was falling like the last 2 games.

  5. Call me crazy, but they need someone like Caruso: A change of pace guard off the bench that can clamp down on defense

  6. I don’t think I’ve seen the lakers loose when lebron n AD combine for 60 plus Reaves putting up 20 is unbelievable… AD had 7 blocks!

Is it bad coaching? Somehow laker starting games horribly is pretty common now..

or do we miss Vando badly ?

  7. i went to the game and i don’t see how you think max had his best game of the season. dlo took a lot of unnecessary contested shots and took away a lot of the offense from ad who should’ve easily had 35+ but dlo and austin stopped a lot of possessions to iso. wood was aight. cam was so bad that he was getting beat constantly by whoever he was guarding and continued to force up contested layups hoping to get a foul. that stretch where we played zone really made no sense because the magic got any shot they wanted from 3s to layups to pull up jumpers. i understand why ham went with zone but it’s obvious lakers run it a lot especially with a team like the magic who move the ball a lot. there should be no reason dlo who was ice cold for the whole game be getting more shots than bron ad or even reaves for that matter.

  8. We have to many ppl bringing the ball up the court and neither DLo or AR are a typical point guard. Ham needs to decide to run the offense thru one or the other
