I know it’s BleacherReport which sucks already, but their write up for Washington just seems asinine.

Sam Howell Can Bolster His Resume in Audition for Starting Job in 2024

Barring a strong run in the second half of the season, the Washington Commanders will select a quarterback early in the first round of next year’s draft. Sam Howell may take a backseat to a rookie in a backup role, or he could start for a new team in 2024.

On Sunday, Howell threw for 325 yards, a touchdown and an interception in a 20-17 win over the New England Patriots, his third game in which he’s thrown for more than 300 yards.
In his second season, first term as a full-time starter, Howell has to clean up some aspects of his game such as his turnovers and tendency to hold onto the ball too long, but he’s shown some playmaking abilities with his arm and legs.

For the season, Howell has thrown for 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions with a 66.6 percent completion rate. If he continues to complete passes at that rate and cuts down on turnovers, the Commanders signal-caller could garner trade buzz among quarterback-needy teams in the offseason.

  1. It would take an absurd amount of assets for Washington to move up for a QB next year. Highly doubt that’s happening.

  2. Probably because the entire football operations is getting an overhaul. You don’t think it’s out of the question that the new GM and coach may want a different QB? EB may not be on the staff either.

That being said, Bleacher Report is trash and why would you post it.

  3. The only reason I’d believe it is if a new regime wants their own guy. But idk. I doubt Harris would see how Howell is playing and hire someone who wanted him gone. The goal of a new regime to build around Howell, hopefully.

  4. The only media worth paying attention to are the local beat guys. Hell, I’d listen to my garbage man before I listened to the national media. At least he’s actually watching the games

  5. It just drives me nuts that all these national media outlets are sooooo completely wrong about Howell. I mean, it’s right there on television. Watch the game. Read reports from any beat reporter for the team. None have ever once thrown out the idea we would trade him and the discussion is building around him, not about next year’s draft.

It just makes me feel like I am in The Truman Show with takes like this. People hear he is on pace to break the sack record 3 weeks ago and that’s just who he is forever. Throws 4 picks against Buffalo and that’s who he is forever. Without Buffalo game, he has 5 interceptions on the season haha. Come on people.

  6. Like, ***WE*** are a QB-needy team. Why wouldn’t we keep the guy that’s doing a good/great job??!?

  7. We love Sam around here, but the article is not wrong. Sam needs to show continued growth and improved performance over the season to guarantee himself as the starter next year. We have seen some up and down performances, even within games. I would love to see him reduce the mistakes and get a better killer instinct late in games. They just barely beat a bad team missing their best pass rusher. The team only eeked out the win because the defense made repeated stops in the 4th when Sam couldn’t extend the leads or sustain drives to kill the clock. I like the improvement we have seen from week 1, but by no means has he shown that he will take the team to the playoffs in the next few years. If he continues his upward trajectory, I have great faith in his future. But I hold reservations, because it is also possible he plateaus as a good, not great QB.

  8. Personally, I think Sam is the starting QB next season in Washington.

But suppose the new HC/GM want to go a different direction and go with their own guy, if Howell continues to play well and ends up with around 4500 yards, 25 TDs, 15 INTs, what kind of draft compensation could we expect?

  9. I dont think they have watched any Commanders games (except maybe Philly) and really have no sources.

It is an r/NFL take, but many of teh guys on there would have done a bit of research first. Poor job.

  10. The only way this happens is if the new head coach really hates Howell, which I doubt. He has played well enough that the owners shouldn’t entertain any candidate that says otherwise

  11. “If he continues to complete passes at that rate and cuts down on turnovers, the Commanders signal-caller could garner trade buzz among quarterback-needy teams in the offseason.”

Does this writer not realize that we are (hopefully were) a ‘quarterback-needy team’? Is BR hiring away writers from BuzzFeed? That whole write-up was just asinine.

  12. If the commanders spend a first to replace Sam I will turn in my fandom and never watch a nfl game again

There’s less then a 0% chance Sam is not the starting QB next year

The kid is literarily playing better and better each game and not to mention second in yards in the league. Outside of his 4 pick game you could argue him being top 10 in the league atm

  13. What an idiotic, lazy take. Diana Russini, a real reporter with inside sources, has already reported that team leadership is looking to build around Howell

  14. If he was a first round the narrative would be totally different. Click bate and nothing more.

  15. I love when white dudes that know nothing above the surface level about football write articles that mean nothing and show how stupid they are.

  16. I’m skeptical to accept that our front office found a diamond in the rough that every other team missed

  17. This is quite literally the dumbest thing I’ve read in the past month. I feel bad for having clicked on that link thus giving that clown his needed site activity

  18. One of the most stupid takes on Sam Howell yet. They take a lineman next year. Period.
