2008 and 2010 Mariners pulling the #9 average down…. 61 wins each of those years.
Spend your pennies wisely, kids. That’s today’s lesson.
Ah yes 2012, the year we decided to try after rebranding and went a whooping 69-93
2023 white Sox. 10th is payroll, 4th in losses
Idk what’s worse:
Philly 73-89 in 2014 with 3rd highest payroll
Philly 63-99 in 2015 with 9th highest payroll
And Crane acts like we can’t afford anyone even though the stadium hasn’t had an empty seat since 2017
The Braves weren’t in the top 10 for 14 straight years… interesting
For a team that bought a championship this year they sure are low in spending.
#8 in payroll is clearly the sweet spot.
You’re welcome for dragging down the average
2012-2017 the era of the Big Money Beisbolcats
Twins in this is where’s Waldo
2011-2018 such a dark time…
Huh I thought we would’ve been top 10 in 2016. I’ve got a feeling we’ll be on this list for 2024

So close to greatness there at the end
Ugh those early 2010s Tigers teams were STACKED with talent. Shame all we got out of it was being swept in the World Series once.
*takes out notepad*
Don’t rank 9th in payroll. got it.
So do teams spend more when they’re good? Or are they good when they spend more?
1 year out of the top 6 highest payrolls and every Red Sox fan forgot that the team is very capable of spending money.
Angels single handedly bringing down the average of the last ten years
You can see the EXACT moment the Wilponzis realized they were broke in 2011.
Wait, the Brewers were tenth once?!?
Where’s Waldo for the marlins
16 and 17 same exact order
Detroit going from straight years at #4 in 2017 to completely off the list.. rebuilds are obviously necessary, but boy does that hurt the fans.
Insane to me that we had historically bad teams and were ranked top ten in payroll during those mid 2000’s years.
The absolute dark ages. Cannot go back to that.
How many of us Red Sox fans went straight to ‘04, ‘07, ‘13, & ‘18 to see if money really does buy championships? lol
Surprised Seattle is on any of these.
Lolmets.
Lolyankees.
*cries blue tears*
Can you do the same thing and highlight the World Series winner from that year?
So 4 years from now the O’s will be 10th. Got it.
Moral of the story: Don’t be 9th.
I don’t really follow payroll stuff. Did the Red Sox spending drop a lot from ’21 to ’23 or did those other teams all increase a lot?
I’d be more interested in a correlation plot of wins vs salary as % of tax threshold
Anyone should be able to guess the year Mike Ilitch died just by looking at this chart.
I don’t know how the White Sox have been in the top 10 fairly frequently when their biggest ever contract is Andrew Benintendi
Trying to remember how the Nats would’ve spent that much in 2021 after falling out of the top 10 in 2020. I’m guessing players who opted out of 2020 don’t count?
Seeing the Angels on this list is honestly so depressing.

Seems like more often than not, the trick is not be a top spender
id sell my soul for a trout ring
Sixth highest to be a total underwhelming failure. Good job Shapiro.
