[Passan] Right-hander Aaron Nola and the Philadelphia Phillies are in agreement on a seven-year, $172 million contract, sources tell ESPN. The deal is pending a physical. But it is done, and Nola, who has spent his whole career in Philadelphia, will remain with the Phillies.

  1. as soon as people floated the idea of nola to the braves i knew it wasn’t happening. we will get some SP out of absolutely nowhere

  2. Never believed a dude who has spent his entire career in Philly was coming to Atlanta in the first place.

  3. Am i the only one that sees this as a good thing? They’ve set a bar on price, so ideally we won’t see the escalation we saw last year with Swanson and Co.

  4. Braves will sign or trade for a Left Handed SP so it’s either Jordan Montgomery, Blake Snell (unlikely), or Eduardo Rodriguez on the market

Montgomery is the overwhelming favorite w/o a QO

I expect Braves “fans” to know their team better…

  5. I’m glad tbh. He’s a nice pitcher and I would’ve taken him obviously, but ~$25m/year over the next 7 years for a guy with 1400 innings over his career already seems like a contract that won’t age well imo.

Edit for a little bit of additional context — Nola has thrown 1422 IP already in his career. When we signed Charlie Morton in the winter of 2020, he had thrown 1439 innings. That’s a lot of mileage.

  6. When’s the last time the Braves signed a free agent to a big contract? AA’s obviously earned a lot of trust, but I’m a little worried that the Braves are going to strike out

Edit: now Nightengale is reporting the Cardinals as the favorites to sign Gray

  7. I can’t say I’m surprised. I think him being interested in Braves while true was leaked by his agent to pressure Philadelphia.

  8. I really think we dodged a bullet. He would have asked for 200 or so outside of Philadelphia

  9. Who was the last proven, solid star caliber pitcher the Braves signed in the off-season (reliever or starter) I feel like it’s been ages, and maybe is part of my anxiety for this off season. It seems we have the do more with less mentality when it comes to arms which granted has worked to varying degrees

  10. I think that leaves Sonny Gray as the non Boras top of the rotation free agent starting pitchers, so if we miss on him I’m not sure what our plan is.
