[Dugar] On Sunday, Pete Carroll said if there’s one thing he’d like to see Geno Smith improve, it’s getting the ball out quicker. Today, Geno agreed with his coach and gave an explanation for it.

Here’s the excerpt for those who don’t want to click on the link:

Question: Pete Carroll said he’d like you to get the ball out quicker but he also acknowledged there’s more to it – protection, routes, etc. What are you seeing?

Geno: “As you said, just processing and going through reads and getting the ball out to the designed guy within the rhythm of the play and the offense. Coach is right: I’ve been probably holding the ball a little bit too long to try and see guys open instead of what I normal do (which is) to throw them open. Just trusting the guys, trusting myself, believing in what we’re doing and getting the ball out and making sure that I’m throwing it pretty accurately so the guys can make catches and make great plays, because they’re great players.”

Question: Why the hesitation? Is it a protection thing? Coverage thing? What has you hesitant?

Geno: “I would say it’s a little bit of all. The thing is to continue to rep it, continue to practice, continue to believe in it and, like I said, trust it and throw it and let the guys make the plays.”

  1. 12 weeks into a season of calling long routes behind (you choose) whatever is the problem of the day oline problems, sending him out with this scripted call and response that somehow sounds familiar…

so, pete, how long ago would you say this became enough of a concern to put some extra focus on it?

and, it appears that your one on one coaching with geno about it, before today, has still been so unsuccessful, for some reason, that it seemed best for the culture to set up the question to be served and let him take the hit and clean it up that way – what would you say to those with short memories but firm belief that youre not one to throw somebody under the bus? (Unless its for the good of the philoso… team, thats understood)

  2. I can’t wait to read this and think they’re all gonna figure this thing out. Thursday night comes and we see a drop back pass to DK that goes incomplete somewhere 4-6 times when he doesn’t get sacked trying.

  3. This was an obvious weakness last year. This should’ve been a major point of focus over the off and preseason, yet here we are 2/3rds of the way through the regular season and it still seems like it’s still in the early stages of getting addressed.

  4. Geno says the right thing every week, then doesn’t improve on any if it.
Seems almost like he can’t play any better than he is…
