  1. He’s looking done. If he doesn’t get 25+ goals this season it might be over, unless he has some resurgence next season. The first part of the season was against much worse teams than the next part too so it’s not going to get easier.

  2. The fact that this is even a conversation is insane. He’s the best goal scorer in history as he’s done it in a league with much better goaltending.

  3. I haven’t watched a capitals game since the leafs game but I don’t know what he expects if he’s still standing at the dot waiting for the one timer pass

  4. And that’s with them putting him out with EN goals to try and feed him freebies.

Incredible scorer, incredible player. You can understand the desire given how close he is.

  5. I worked at a bar in the DC area (northern VA) that Ove usually frequents. He’s such a good dude and the people in DC adore him.

For reference our bar usually closes at 11-12 but I would frequently stay untill 2-3am just for him and his two massive Russian bodyguards lol.

That said we can all see dude is spent. He has declined since he got his cup: I always hoped he would catch up but I’m afraid he’s got a year or two left and he’s not going anywhere close to the record if he keeps up how he’s been playing.

  6. I was at the game in LA. He looked was pretty invisible. I had hoped he’d get to fire a few, he’s an amazing talent.

  7. I think if he really wants to get the record he needs to move on to a team like Tampa or Edmonton. Washington just doesn’t have the pieces

  8. It is too bad when you think about the fact that he missed what should have been his rookie season because of the 04-05 lockout, and then had another season shortened because of a lockout, and then lost another half a season due to the two seasons that overlapped the pandemic. If he’d gotten those extra games in, he’d probably have beaten it by now TBH.

  9. His and his teammates age had caught up.

He’s not the presence he used to be. He doesn’t drive the play, he doesn’t make the plays, and he isn’t creating energy. He’s got nothing in the tank.

I really don’t blame him either. He’s got an incredibly stressful life and that gets to you. He’s got multiple kids, he’s trying to chase a huge record, he’s a leader of a team who just isn’t made to win, he’s in his late 30s still trying to be one of the best players in the game… oh yeah and he is married to the niece of probably the most wanted man in the world who has went completely off the rails.

That all gets to you. I mean hell, look what’s happened to McDavid and he only has 1 of those problems. It’s incredible he can even still play.

  10. Crazy how the Caps are 12-6-2 and have a -4 goal differential. They just winning tight games and losing 4-1 or something? Lol. But yeah, it’s tough to score on a team that doesn’t really have anyone to feed him the puck, they have 51 goals for this season, 2nd lowest in the league. He might have to consider waiving his NMC/NTC to go to a contender. If a deal can be worked out, given his enormous cap hit. If he wants to break the record that is.

  11. Weird that the Russian dude hasn’t turned to a witch’s brew of PEDs to try to stave off age related decline

  12. Starting to think he’ll have to go to a contender if he wants the record, backstrom being out and likely done hurts too. He’s got to hit 25-30 goals minimum if he wants a shot at the record in the last 2 or so years and at least from what I’ve seen, he can’t drive play anymore. He did great even with his speed slowing down as of a few years ago but add in the abuse he takes and gives it’s crazy he’s been so consistent over the years. Sucks ass that he missed so much time due to lockouts and when Covid happened. I’d guess he’d be 20-30 goals away by now at most if he played those games. I’m pulling for him though!

  13. Even if he doesn’t get the record I feel like objectively he is the best goal scorer ever and it’s not even a question that he would have gotten the record if not for lockouts / covid games, even if he doesn’t get the record he is the best goal scorer ever. And I’m a ranger fan

  14. Obviously he isn’t quite as effective as he was in his prime but he hasn’t suddenly hit a wall this season, he’s just been unlucky. He’s still averaging nearly 4 shots a game, the difference is that his shooting % is half his career average (6.5 vs 12.9). The quality of his shots hasn’t declined from last season so his lack of production can be explained by simple bad luck. According to various models, his individual expected goals is between 8-11, which puts him at around a 40 goal pace.

  15. I’ve watched every game this season with the caps. Ovi’s brutal to watch — he looks winded most shifts and seems to just not be able to get it going. Lots of bad turn overs and possession. I’d love him to break the record but I’m making peace with it just not happening at this rate and looking to the future of the team.

  16. I said this at the start of the season, and I still think Ovi will have one of his worst seasons and ultimately won’t catch Gretzky. I looked at comparable players of similar age. The ones who had late-career success did so after they got traded, and probably played with upgraded teammates. I don’t see Ovi going anywhere. Sadly, sticking around on this team is probably going to hurt his chances and hurt the Caps.

  17. He’ll pour it on the last half of the season he always does im not worried about him.

  18. Ah, the morning ritual, checking match results only to see my favorite teams have lost again. But then, a glance at the stats and there’s Ovechkin, steadfastly maintaining his commitment to scoring absolutely nothing. It brightens my day every time!

  19. He spent the summer partying in Russia with russian celebrities instead of training. Only has himself to blame.

  20. Why was 16-17 such a bad year for him? Only scored in avg of 40% of games played. And this seasons significantly worse at 25% or so.

  21. OCI has the better goal/game ratio. Both at about 0.6goal/game. That’s about 49 goals/82game season for Wayne and 50/season for the Gr8

  22. I mean the Caps power play is a crime to the sport at this point. That was his bread and butter for goal scoring. Maybe a caps fan can weigh in an give an explanation because it’s baffling.

  23. Without a solid playmaker he won’t get those setups for one timers. This caps team is drastically declining, he needs another team.
