[Cotillo] Craig Breslow says Josh Winckowski will join the group of versatile guys who will be stretched out as a starter (Houck, Whitlock, Crawford, Pivetta). Also said adding a 2B is still on the to-do list, albeit behind rotation help. Acknowledged a trade is more likely than FA at 2B

  1. No Craig no. We tried doing this with a number of guys and it was a spectacular failure.

Trying to make Whitlock a starter again is negligence.

  2. Feels like this is laying the groundwork for us missing out on Yamamoto and maybe even Montgomery and/or Snell. The SP market is shockingly high at the moment. By all accounts Yamamoto could get close to $300 million at this point, so I think there’s some cause for concern about a deal being done with any marquee free agent. Might end up more likely to sign guys like Giolito or Lugo and try and trade for Edward Cabrera or Corbin Burns.

Obviously I don’t know anything but Breslow’s recent comments made about no prospect being untouchable and maybe there are some dots to be connected.

  3. We at least need some legit innings eaters. Houck, Whitlock, and especially Winckowski shouldn’t be starting.

Depth is key too so we avoid a month of two bullpen games a week. Bullpen games are gross.

  4. No no no. Whitlock was dominate when he was in the bullpen. Same goes for Winckowski. Pivetta turned things around when he moved to the bullpen. Think it was a mental thing for him. Crawford is good for 3-4 innings.

  5. Explains why they’re exploring cheaper options in the FA market (Lugo, Giolito). I could live with one of them assuming they also work out a trade for Gilbert or someone of the same caliber/years of control. That being said they should not be looking at Whitlock as a starter anymore, nor Wincowksi—dude was perfectly solid as a late innings reliever last season, why mess with that?

  6. So dumb, stop trying for cheap starters it’s ok to have versatile options out of the bullpen that can work the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th. There’s a reason they aren’t starters. They lose effectiveness after 50 pitches or so.

  7. We don’t need to trade or sign. We have multiple guys that can play 2B! Same with pitching….

  8. Gonna be the same old same old. Why the fuck fire Chaim? Breslow is going to be a disaster

  9. Honestly, I don’t hate it. At this point it’s been decided that the pitching development on this team was poor. So why not see what your staff can make happen?

  10. Please stop holy shit. We have dudes that we know are great in the bullpen yet keep fucking trying to turn them into starters. Im so tired of this.

  11. I remember the year before the Sale trade when the rotation was, “we have solid pitching and any given night a guy could be an ace!” with guys like Buck & Miley + Porcello.

I also remember it being a complete fucking disaster, and held the organization remember that you shouldn’t skimp on pitching.

It’s cool this organization refuses to learn lessons because it’s cooler to make money off an NHL team that hasn’t been good for a few seasons now…

  12. We’ve gone through this process more than enough times to know that this is NOT the move. Get us legit starters who can take us deep into the games without having to kill our bullpen.

  13. There is absolutely no reason for Boston to not be above the CBT threshold this season. I’m a pretty progressive fan when it comes to roster construction and use of sabermetrics, but they need to put their nuts on the table and get 2 battle tested big league (or NPB) starters. If the Boston Red Sox continue this trend of rolling out stretched out relievers as SP, I’m going to lose my marbles

  14. This is really out of left field and I know has negative 50% chance of happening. But I kinda hope they try to trade for Ezequiel Duran at 2B. He’s kind of screwed in Texas with not having a spot to play ever with semein, seager and Jung there. A nice, young, right handed bat first infielder.
