[Howsam] I’ve seen a LOT of this. The Jays having the season they had and then this Ohtani letdown is going to absolutely kill the Jays’ tickets sales unless they have something insane up their sleeves to energize the fanbase. Cody Bellinger isn’t that.

  1. I’m thinking one maybe two more years of trying to scrape together a playoff team then rebuild time?

  2. They had the opportunity to be sold out all year and have record merchandise sales, they blew it.

  3. The question I want to know is how much are dodgers tickets going to cost to justify the salary of that team. Bloody hell.

  4. This is true. Honestly would’ve been better to never be finalists on ohtani, then the Jays fans wouldn’t have had their expectations so high

  5. Can tell you right now, I’m not planning on attending a game this season. Could change, but that’s where I’m at.

  6. I can’t believe we are being told that we have to get the front office CREDIT for this outcome. You got used as leverage or got outbid and now have to pivot when other pieces like Soto are not available. How is being “considered” a win or help us next year?

Unless they allocate that $70 million elsewhere, why does this pursuit help us?

Edit: Please no one go to the this helps us because the baseball world now knows “we are serious”, lol.

  7. So….is anyone going to answer the most important question?!!! What is Ohtani’s dog’s name?

  8. Looking forward to the Sportsnet employed Rogers shills trying to spin this into a positive.

  9. You guys, we still have John Schneider as our manager. That’s something to look forward to…

  10. I don’t feel let down whatsoever, never for a second did I think Ohtani was going to sign with the Jays. Precedent is that the biggest free agents always sign with a large market American based team, not to mention the Jays have the same number of playoff win as the Angels over the last 3 years: 0

  11. This is fucking stupid dude. The jays did their part – we will find out in the coming days their offer to him, which will likely be north of 500 even 600m. The only reason we all feel like this is because some reporters were *unprecedentedly* horrific at their jobs yesterday and got all of our hopes up. You can bet your ass Belli is gonna sell tickets, hope we can sign him. There’s still a path for a solid offseason ahead

  12. Any more Varsho types out there ? And do we have any elite prospects left to trade for em?![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface)

  13. Yeah between the disappointment of the last few years, missing out on Ohtani, the Yankees getting Soto, and the lack of obvious routes to significantly improve, the window basically feels closed. They are a borderline playoff team at best right now, and a deeply unexciting one at that.

  14. If you thought Toronto had a snowballs chance in hell of signing ohtani you have another think coming. Every year we see the same thing about free agency and every year they sign somewhere else. This year is no different.

  15. I was so over the team after the wild card. The Ohtani thing got me excited again. Now I’m beyond over it.

  16. Dude could have had this whole country and all of Japan behind him, instead chooses the villain arc and goes to the Dodgers. Fucking hell.

  17. Try to trade for Trout if there’s genuine concern about fans interest. That’ll at least spark some interest with a lot of fans

  18. Not only is Cody Bellinger “not that”, I actively don’t want him. Unless the contract is wizardry and heavily team favored, fuck that. He could be out of baseball in 3 years.

  19. Although Cody Bellinger would be disappointing after this whole debacle, I’d be even more disappointed if it’s Matt Chapman… his at-bats in the latter half of the season were just brutal to watch

  20. Worst case scenario was to have the fans believing we had him for a few hours. Would have been better to stay out of it completely.

  21. If you’re going to say Bellinger isn’t “that”, then what is lol. Nobody expects a move as big as Bellinger.

If they win they’ll sell tickets, the basic logic hasn’t changed.

  22. Maybe ross will trade another top prospect for a guy that is a worse hitter than cavan biggio

  23. Speaking as a casual fan who only tunes in if the Blue Jays are in the playoffs, no one else signing is going to energize the fanbase like Ohtani was. That includes Juan Soto. I always cheer for the Blue Jays to do well but I don’t enjoy the sport of baseball if unless the stakes are high. Ohtani was pretty much the only guy that was gonna get me interested to watch April, May, June and July games. August is when I normally start following the team earnestly since that’s when summer is ending and the playoff race heats up. Before August, I just check the scores, catch a game or two if a big team is in town and that’s it. Rogers was basically targetting people like myself with this Ohtani signing. Ohtani simply transcends the sport. We’ve never had an athlete like that in Toronto.

  24. Let’s face it, the Canadian fans got trolled by the American media and opportunistic click bait merchants. Idk how you can blame the Jays FO here. Fact of the matter is Ohtani was probably 100% always going to LA no matter what.

  25. I mean, i’m one of those people who isn’t going to a game this year. not after today. I already wasn’t going to really pay much attention to them after the year they had, and now I’m vindicated in doing that.

Just another extension of frustration of the 2023 season.

This team needs to be redone from the top down.

    See you in 25

  26. Get a decent bat, they are still a playoff team. They have top tier pitching, to the point they could trade some of it for a bat hopefully with term.

It’s not all dire. Hopefully they have a backup plan.

  27. Kind of embarrassed to be a Jays fan right now…how quickly were all united(which was the proud part)and how quickly we’ve just turned to essentially cannibalizing each other…

That being said, Bellinger would help, as well as now trying to sign Bichette and Vladdy to extensions. Can’t sit around crying over spilt milk. We can’t just pretend to be big boys…have to actually be one.

  28. Time to end this Atkins/Shapiro disaster of an experiment. They’ve done nothing but spin the wheels the last few years and for some reason everyone pleads patience with them. Guess what, were almost at the end of this generations ‘run’ and we have done nothing . They dismantled what they had going because the team was having ‘too much fun’ and it blew up in their face. Get rid of these clowns already.
