[Greenberg] Chicago Bears defensive lineman Montez Sweat said head coach Matt Eberflus deserves a lot of credit for continuing to keep this team together because it wasn’t like that where he was.
December 11, 2023
Sweat: “This is a really tight group. Eberflus is a great coach. He keeps us motivated. A lot of respect for him as a coach.”

Eberflus knows defense. Last year was bad and the start of this year was also bad but once we’ve gotten some good playmakers and rookie development, this defense is playing like a top unit, especially since the addition of Sweat. I’m not a big Eberflus guy but you can’t argue with result. Let’s hope the offense keeps it dialed up for the last month of the season.
What does Sweat know about whether Flus is a good coach or not? r/chiBears knows ball and has decided Ben Johnson is the next great head coach.
It seems a lot of people are out on Flus and that he’s no good as a head coach, but I kind of feel everything about this season suggests the opposite. This team has lots of rookies and newcomers and while they (obviously) struggled to start the season, he kept them together and playing hard. They made mistakes and are demonstrating they’ve learned from them. So many position groups have improved as the season has gone on – how can that not be a sign the coaching is good?
At this stage I’d be disappointed if they moved on from him. There has been so many seasons over the years where it felt the team was going absolutely nowhere – this really isn’t one of them.
I mean sure, the defense is nearing Elite tier, but like… It’s the same song and dance as it’s been for the past 30+ years. The Bear’s curse. An Elite Defense and an Abysmal Offense.

I’m wanting a new flavor, tbh.
We played 3 decent games and suddenly everyone’s ignoring the previous 30 losses
I’m not an Eberflus fan, but I gotta give him a ton of credit in that the team hasn’t quit on him. We’ve seen that story plenty of times where the season starts off rocky and the team torpedoes, but he’s kept the ship afloat.
Extend Flus you cowards 😂
I rate Eberflus significantly higher than Nagy in his ability to be a head coach and do his part defense). Needs a new OC desperately tho.
I will say he is god awful with the press tho and his coaches getting sacked midseason are a slight cause of concern.
Overall tho, I’m cool with Flus. Players like him too
I don’t think anyone doubts or has doubted flus as a defensive coordinator. Just think that’s what he should have been all along
I mean he was playing on the Commanders – who have shit coaching
They’ve tried to single cover #1 WRs all year even after getting burned repeatedly.
That Commanders didn’t bother putting a safety over top of Tyreek Hill on multiple plays last week and got burned twice for long TDs.

I’m not surprised the players like Eberflus – he’s not all bad. I just think we should have higher standards.
We definitely at least need a new OC and QB….. I think we should probably get a new HC also, but Eberflus would be the most acceptable of the 3 to keep.
I thought for sure he’d have lost the locker room by now. But they are truly coming together as the season progresses. Kudos to the Flus.
The one thing that I have to give Flus credit for (and what I’ve been giving him credit for all year) is that this has not quit on him.
Not that long ago, Bears went almost an entire calendar year without a single victory. It would be so easy for the team to quit on him, especially guys from last year’s roster.
So yes, while I still don’t think he’s a great coach, it was always premature to judge him especially because the roster was constructed to lose last year. It’s so easy to write him off because of how he sounds in front of a microphone but he’s obviously doing something right when he’s dealing with the team.
I’d like to hear from Mooney? Sweat just got paid and is new ….so
Flus is staying. Getsy has these four games to show he can call an aggressive game plan. Flus is not dumb and knows only 32 of these jobs and getting Getsy to let JF play instead of making JF play will be evident.
Funny how Sweat basically called out the Commanders by saying over there, “they were just waiting for the end of the season”
How Ron Rivera is still employed is wild
The players respect him and his defense is great. Chicago fans are awful tbh.
Sweat and the Defensive Analyst are when things started to change.
Honestly ditch Getsy let flus run the defense and we might have something in this coaching staff
Dude hasn’t lost the locker room despite some terrible, terrible lows. Honestly, that is way more impressive than people realize and actually speaks better to Flus than I probably would like to give him credit for.
Something I’m noticing. He has kept the team together through horrible times. Credit due.
I was chicken little week 4 saying the season is done, Fields is bad, Flus is bad, and bad coaching can’t overcome a season like the one we were about to see. Well we had a horrible season until recently and I still think that badly coached teams collapse in that situation, so he’s gotta be doing something right.
Well yeah, as bad as Eberflus has been (and he has been really bad), it should be common knowledge that Ron Rivera is significantly worse. How that guy has conned his way into keeping a head coaching job the last 3 years is truly a mystery.
Honestly if they finish the season strong I wouldn’t mind keeping Flus with Fields, I just want Getsy gone
Extend Flus.
Still need to get rid of Fields he’s not the answer. This win is ALL thanks to the defense.
He’s an awful head coach I could care less. Hopefully gone soon
Welp. Maybe reddit doesn’t know shit from shynola
Man… I like flus for what he’s done on defense but is everyone forgetting that his two guys got fired for “hr issues”… on an nfl team. Didn’t he hire them? That’s kind of fucked.
