  1. This…inspires confidence? Like, I assumed we were completely out honestly. Clearly that’s not the case.

  2. I’m probably reading into it too much but Cora’s body language seemed upbeat about this particular thing, so, maybe.

  3. Wouldn’t say we’re the favourites, but here’s some stuff that’s come out lately.

Carrabis and Merloni were pretty down on our chances the the other day, but Jared said two things on his most recent pod:
    1. Someone he trusts told him that the Red Sox did make an offer of 300 million, and it may even be closer to 325

    2. Another person told him he’d be really shocked if Yamamoto chose Boston.

Seems pretty clear the Sox did make an initial offer, it’s just people in the industry don’t think he’ll go here (could be due to perception since they haven’t spent big in FA recently). Most insiders admit they keep hearing contradictory info, and it’s really tough to figure out what’s happening. Morosi, Heyman, etc always say “team X is a favourite” but those types of reports are always weird and based on vibes imo, meanwhile Passan hasn’t indicated that anyone is a favourite.

Also, we have no idea if he visited Fenway, or if that even matters. The Sox keep everything close to the chest (Breslow wouldn’t even admit they were interested in Yamamoto at the winter meetings). every day last week we knew when the Dodgers, Yankees, Phillies etc were having their meeting with Yamamoto but the Sox never leaked when it happened or who attended it, all we know is they met him and his agent in California.

Cora also made some good points in the interview today about how a visit to Fenway really doesn’t even matter in the grand scheme of things.

Also in the Athletic today team sources indicated they’re very involved still with Yamamoto (really the only thing they’ve leaked this whole time).

I’m probably forgetting some other stuff I’ve read, but I think they’ve got a shot. I think it would’ve leaked out by now to someone like Passan or Speier that they’re out (remember Passan was the one to say when they moved off of Ohtani)

  4. If we were out of the chase with Yamamoto we would have already offered too much money to the wrong players to overcompensate for several years of standing on the sidelines.

  5. I’m not very optimistic, but all that aside, imagine if we did land him suddenly after all the “It’s between NY & LA, Red Sox have no chance” chatter? There would be such a meltdown in other fan bases & would feel so fucking satisfying.

  6. Ok who can name the players from the teams that Alex named that were on the Buffaloes this last season?

  7. i won’t really be that mad if the sox offer 300+ and he just liked
    the mets more or whatever.

it will upset me if they don’t take that 300m and split it across multiple pitchers/right handed bat to make this team better now.

I dont think this team is an offseason of bad free agents away from contending but you can’t just roll out what you did last year

  8. Yamamoto spent his entire career sans this past season playing with Yoshida. When Cora sparks the “our left fielder” remark, that is basically 100% of what I see as our chances in this thing. If they be besties we actually in it. If not then we not.

  9. I don’t see him signing here without touring Fenway. That’s got to be a big attraction for any international baseball star aware of MLB history.
